When I popped out of the Virginia PtP Emergency Cooling Rabbit Hole, that I spent a portion of the winter down, I realized that there was some money left from the donor. We will now have two sources of running water available wherever unsaddling happens, as well as our portable spray tank, for critical heat moments🤠

PtP racing in Virginia is flourishing, as the AAA league of jump racing, great courses, same horses, trainers and riders as the NSA meets along with pony racing, young riders and adrenaline seeking foxhunters (male and female divisions)❤️ My current worry, as a steward of Va PtPs, is getting the next generation involved in officiating. I won’t sugar coat it, it is a day of volunteer WORK, almost a calling, but I can tell you, it’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of a safe, successful race day, for our local hunts and the larger steeplechasing community. Sometimes it’s daunting to enter into what seems like an insular community. Don’t be daunted! Spring Point to Point season will be here before we know it. Long story short. Friends at one of last Spring’s meets, witnessed the response to an overheated horse. Quick Vet response and a bucket brigade of cold water from one of our strategically placed troughs. I’ve never seen a fatality from heat but it can be disconcerting to the fans. Our great Virginia PtP courses are not dedicated race courses and for the most part don’t have a ready supply of hydrants and hoses hence my obsession over having tubs of cold water and buckets in critical areas. After the races that day the friends asked if there was anything else that could be done. As a matter of fact, I did have an idea but no funding. The friends were happy to fund my “folly” and here’s the result. A mobile 4-5 minute flow of cold water that will be parked in a critical position and can quickly get to an emergency heat situation. Tubs and buckets will still be there for dousing after unsaddling and along the path back to the stable area. I hope to not have much use for my contraption but better to have it and not need it, right?

So yes, it feels a little weird to admit, but I practice Vedic meditation twice a day. Often, in the afternoon, I’ll find a quiet spot, church parking lot, arboretum, park etc and meditate in my truck. So here’s my sign. It’s an interesting phenomenon, and my skepticism is waning, as my resting heart rate has dropped by 6 beats per minute and most nights I sleep through the night, often waking up in the same position 🤷🏼‍♂️
