Since I often say that Yoga is much more than just an exercise program, I sometimes get the response that it isn’t “real exercise” or people downplay it’s ability to help you loose weight by saying that you don’t get any cardio with Yoga.
Whenever I get this response, I invite the person to join me in just 10 of these movements.
This is the basic Vinyasa sequence from the Yoganaga that I practice. It consists of a group of asanas (Yoga poses) that are tied together in one movement.
There are about 11 asanas or movements tied together here;
1. Open in Prayer Pose
2. Pranayam
3. Diver Pose
4. Diver 2 Pose
5. Plank Pose
6. Upward Dog Pose
7. Cobra Pose
8. Back to Upward Dog
9. Downward Dog Pose
10. Jump into Hand to Foot Pose
11. Spring back to Prayer Pose, and repeat.
Anyone who has ever joined me after making that statement has always taken it back and shown respect for the vigor and burn of a dedicated Yoga practice.
At one point I’ve been able to do 100 of these vinyasas in under 30 minutes, as the warm up to my practice. Due to life circumstances I’ve fallen a bit behind in my asana practice over the last year, but I’ll be back to doing 100 of these daily soon.
This is not something that I practice at this pace or vigor with my new students, and we won’t be going quite this hard in my Yoga Baby Steps program, but I just wanted to demonstrate the levels of burn and “cardio” that are achievable in your living room with a focus and sincere Yoga Practice.
Thanks,
