May is Better Speech & Hearing Month 🤍

Hi to my new followers—I’m Rachael, a SLP, Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing, specializing in tracheostomy teams, trach care/management, dysphagia, and medically complex patients.

If you’ve been here for a while, you may have noticed I’ve been a little quieter lately. Life shifted in the most meaningful way—I became a mom. Over the past months, I’ve been learning how to navigate this new season of life while also being a career driven mama!

Motherhood has changed the way I see everything, including my work. It’s deepened my empathy, strengthened my purpose, and reminded me that behind every patient is someone who loves them. That perspective now lives at the center of everything I do.

While I may have taken a step back, I’m not stepping away from this space—I’m growing into it differently. This platform will always be a place for tracheostomy management, dysphagia education, and advocating for patients and families. But it’s also becoming a space where I share more of my life outside the hospital—postpartum wellness, rebuilding strength, finding balance, and showing up as both a clinician and a mother.

I’m really happy you’re here. Thank you for being part of this next chapter with me 🤍

Three years at Jackson where miracles are made daily ✨💙

This past year, becoming a mother has reshaped everything. I show up a little more tired, often running on fumes, learning how to preserve energy for home while still giving my patients my all. It’s a constant balance, daily dance between career and motherhood. A balance that has strengthened my voice, deepened my empathy, and reminded me that every patient is someone’s whole world.

Professionally what started as a passion for tracheostomy care has grown into something so much bigger. Watching our trach team evolve, building structure, advocating for patients, and truly changing outcomes, has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career.

Grateful for how far we’ve come and excited for what’s ahead 🤍

The summer I became…
Rachael Silveira, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S — a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders! 💙

I am so proud to have accomplished this goal with my little Kate by my side — first in my belly, and then through countless study sessions during maternity leave.👶🏼

This accomplishment has been a journey, not a destination. My work ethic, dedication, and drive have evolved along the way, especially as I embrace my role as a mother and strive to be a role model for my daughter. None of this would have been possible without my husband and family supporting every “crazy” idea — from trach team proposals to Zoom lectures to conferences across the US.😍🔥🥳

With this BCS-S, my goal is to continue merging my passion for the tracheostomy population with my belief in the vital role SLPs play on multidisciplinary teams — all with a mission of advancing quality of care.

I am forever grateful to my mentor, Theresa , for kicking me into gear after my initial rejection 2 years ago, and for always being a springboard for my “out-there” ideas. And to my BCS-S colleagues — thank you for reminding me to never dim my light, and to KEEP pushing, no matter how many times the answer is “no.”🩷

Excited for what’s ahead in research, mentorship, and patient advocacy 🙏🏼

“It Trachs a Village”- Couldn’t be more true! 🙏🏼
I have put more thought into this daily, with this new chapter of life ahead of me (welcoming baby Kate into the world) to truly understand the meaning of coming together as a community to facilitate improved quality of life (both in your professional and personal life).
In our medical careers as SLPS- I love to highlight tracheostomy management and the need for a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to patient care which encompasses medical professionals, families, and the broader community, to achieve optimal outcome. This CANNOT be achieved by one discipline or personal but a VILLAGE and collaborative approach to improved patient outcomes.🥳
Next time you have a tracheostomy patient I challenge you to take the VILLAGE approach and embrace all the multidisciplinary members that are assets to your patients success. 💕
