From another:
🎱 BEING A LEAGUE TEAM CAPTAIN IS MORE THAN JUST PUTTING NAMES ON A SCORE SHEET.
Anybody can put together a team. Not everybody can lead one.
Being a captain comes with responsibilities that go far beyond showing up on league night and deciding who plays next.
YOU’RE NOT JUST RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LINEUP. YOU’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LEADERSHIP.
🎯 1. KNOW YOUR PLAYERS.
Understand their strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and how they handle pressure. A good captain knows when a player needs encouragement, when they need advice, and when they simply need space to play their game.
🎯 2. MAKE DECISIONS THAT BENEFIT THE TEAM.
Not every matchup should be based on friendships, seniority, or who wants to play. Sometimes being captain means making an unpopular decision because it’s what’s best for the team.
🎯 3. NEVER EMBARRASS YOUR PLAYERS.
Nobody needs a captain shaking their head, criticizing every mistake, or making them feel worse after a loss. Players already know when they’ve struggled. Your reaction can either build their confidence or destroy it.
🎯 4. HOLD EVERYONE TO THE SAME STANDARD.
Attendance, sportsmanship, communication, and accountability matter. You cannot demand commitment from some players while allowing others to do whatever they want.
🎯 5. KNOW THE RULES.
Understand your league’s handicap system, scoring procedures, coaching rules, eligibility requirements, and lineup restrictions. Your team shouldn’t suffer because its captain didn’t understand the regulations.
🎯 6. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY WHEN THINGS GO WRONG.
Bad lineup? Own it. Miscommunication? Fix it. Team struggling? Look for solutions instead of someone to blame.
🎯 7. REMEMBER WHY PEOPLE JOIN LEAGUES.
Yes, people want to win. But they also want to improve, compete, enjoy themselves, and feel like they belong to something. A winning record means very little if everyone on your team is miserable.
HERE’S WHAT EVERY CAPTAIN NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND:
Your strongest player isn’t more important than your weakest player.
Your best friend doesn’t deserve special treatment.
And your authority as captain doesn’t automatically earn you respect.
Respect comes from being fair, prepared, dependable, and willing to lead by example.
A great captain doesn’t just build a team capable of winning matches.
A GREAT CAPTAIN BUILDS A TEAM THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT TO BE PART OF.
🎱 League players, what’s ONE quality you believe every good team captain should have? And captains, what’s the hardest part of leading a team that most players don’t realize?
