🔥 THE AMERICAN TOWN THAT NEVER STOPPED BURNING
CENTRALIA, PENNSYLVANIA
PART ONE OF A THREE PART SERIES
The Fire That Changed Everything
Imagine living in a small American town where generations of families built their lives, raised their children, worked in the coal mines, and never imagined that the ground beneath their homes would eventually force nearly everyone to leave.
That was Centralia, Pennsylvania.
In the early 1960s, Centralia was a thriving coal mining community of approximately 1,100 residents. It had churches, schools, businesses, and families whose roots stretched back generations.
Then, in May 1962, something happened that would change the town forever.
A fire reportedly started in a local landfill near an abandoned coal mine. What initially appeared to be an ordinary trash fire spread into underground coal deposits and abandoned mining tunnels.
The fire had moved beneath the town.
Firefighters and government officials attempted to extinguish it, but the underground coal continued burning.
The flames were largely invisible from the surface. Residents continued their everyday lives, unaware of just how serious the situation would eventually become.
As the years passed, the underground fire spread. Dangerous gases, rising ground temperatures, and unstable soil would eventually threaten the community.
What began as a seemingly manageable fire in 1962 would become one of the most extraordinary environmental disasters in American history.
More than 60 years later, the underground fire is still burning.
And the town that once stood above it has almost completely disappeared.
But the most frightening chapter was still to come.
In 1981, the ground suddenly opened beneath a 12 year old boy, exposing the terrifying danger that had been developing underground for nearly two decades.
