Guy de Boer back on course after Lanzarote: Spirit sailing hard south
American solo sailor Guy de Boer has been back at sea since leaving Lanzarote on 5 October 2026 and is making good speed. He is continuing the Golden Globe Race 2026 aboard his Tashiba 36 Spirit in the Chichester Class.
Shortly after departure, on the morning of 6 October, Spirit was making about 4.9 knots and heading west of Fuerteventura. The rest of the fleet was already some 1,500 nautical miles further south; the gap to leader Damien Guillou was around 2,700 nautical miles.
On 7 October, de Boer sent a short message via the race organisation: one satellite phone was down, but he was “getting back in rhythm,” “flying on course,” and thanking everyone who believed in him.
In the tracker update of 8 October his pace was estimated even higher: around 6.6 knots, with strong conditions ahead. The organisation described him as “flying south” and noted that, outside the official standings, he is rapidly closing the gap on the back of the fleet. The adventure is very much still on.
The leaders are meanwhile much further south. Damien Guillou (Solarem) was approaching or had reached Trindade, with Pat Lawless some distance behind as the nearest pursuer. The mid-fleet is still struggling with the remnants of the doldrums. De Boer still has months to close the gap, the ADVENTURE is very much ALIVE indeed!!!
