HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TRAIN?

For steady improvement and longevity in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we recommend:

🥋 BJJ: 3 times per week
💪 Strength training: 2 times per week
🧘 Mobility and recovery: 3 times per week

SAMPLE WEEKLY PROGRAM

Monday: BJJ
Tuesday: Strength + Mobility
Wednesday: BJJ
Thursday: Mobility and Recovery
Friday: BJJ Competition Class
Saturday: Strength
Sunday: Light Mobility and Recovery

This split seems to be one of the best approaches for longevity in BJJ. It provides the right balance of technical training, competition preparation, strength, mobility, and recovery.

As a competition approaches, you can gradually increase your BJJ training frequency while paying close attention to what your body is telling you. More training is not always better—adjust your intensity and prioritize recovery when needed.

This balanced program can help you:

✅ Improve your BJJ technique and conditioning
✅ Prepare for competition-level intensity
✅ Build strength and reduce the risk of injury
✅ Improve flexibility, movement, and recovery
✅ Stay consistent without overtraining
✅ Keep training BJJ for years to come

Beginners can start with two BJJ classes per week and gradually increase their training. Experienced students may train more often, but recovery should always remain part of the program.

Whether your goal is improving your BJJ, getting stronger, losing weight, competing, or staying healthy, we can help you create a personalized program that fits your goals and schedule.

WHY DO YOU TRAIN BJJ?

To become stronger? Build confidence? Relieve stress? Learn self-defense? Develop discipline?

Then why are you missing BJJ?

You cannot reach your goals by training only when it’s convenient. The days you’re tired, busy, or unmotivated are the days showing up matters most.

Jiu-Jitsu builds resilience. It teaches you to stay calm under pressure, overcome discomfort, recover from setbacks, and keep moving forward.

Stop making excuses. Remember why you started.

Pack your gear. Show up. Train. Repeat.

Your goals are waiting for you on the mats.

Take Ownership of Your Journey.

Champions are built long before class begins.

Arrive early.

Warm up with purpose.

Come to class with a goal.

Know what you need to improve.

Ask questions.

Stay after and drill.

Your coaches will guide you.

Your teammates will help you.

But no one can train for you.

Connect with your teammates.

Train together outside of class.

Stay after class.

Talk about Jiu-Jitsu.

Talk about life.

Some of the greatest lessons aren’t learned during class—they’re learned sitting on the mats together afterward.

BJJ Boston is more than a gym.

It’s a family.

Take care of it.

Respect it.

If you use the mats outside of class, please clean up after yourselves so they’re ready for the next team chasing the same goal.

The same applies to life.

Take ownership of your health.

Get your annual check-ups.

Take ownership of your family.

Take ownership of your future.

You can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can control how you prepare, how you respond, and whether you keep moving forward.

The Fight Continues.

See you on the mats. 💙🥋🇺🇸

THE FIGHT CONTINUES 💙🥋🇺🇸

This wasn’t an easy post to write.

A few weeks ago, I heard the words no one expects to hear:

“You have prostate cancer.”

What still leaves me dumbfounded is this…

I felt perfectly fine.

I had recently started TRT, and because my PSA numbers were fluctuating, my doctor insisted I get checked. To be honest, I even skipped a few appointments because I thought everything was fine.

I’m incredibly grateful my doctor kept pushing me.

It may have saved my life.

After meeting with my doctors, I’ve decided to move forward with a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

My surgery is scheduled for September 3 at 11:58 AM.

Coincidentally, that was also supposed to be the day I stepped onto the mats to compete at the IBJJF Master Worlds.

Instead of competing…

I’ll be fighting a different battle.

I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t been hard. Some days it’s been difficult to stay motivated. But every day I remind myself why I’m fighting.

My family.

My friends.

My students.

My BJJ family.

Being a Marine, wrestler, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach has taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless—it’s about moving forward even when you’re scared.

Right now, my doctors believe they caught this early, and I’m thankful for that. We’ll know more after surgery.

I’m sharing this for one reason:

Please don’t put off getting checked because you feel fine.

I almost did.

A simple PSA test and a doctor who refused to give up on me may have saved my life.

My goal is simple: heal, get back on the mats, keep teaching, keep coaching, and compete again.

I will not always prevail…

But I will always keep moving forward.

The Fight Continues

Congratulations to Desmon, Malik, Ares and Brielle on earning their Gray-White Belts!🥋

Each of these students have been part of the BJJ Boston family for over a year. They consistently work hard, lead by example and go above and beyond to welcome and help new students.

Their positive attitudes help create an atmosphere where everyone can train hard, improve and have fun! We’re incredibly proud of their growth - both on and off the mats! This achievement is well deserved for each and every one!👏

Some promotions hit a little differently, and this is one of them. Congratulations to Fletch & Big Chris on earning their Blue Belts!🔵🥋

These guys have been with us for years, going all the way back to our Haverhill location. They’ve been there through the growth of the academy, the long nights of training, the hard rounds, and everything in between. They’ve just kept showing up, putting in the work, and getting better every time they stepped on the mats.

Watching their progress over the years has been something special. They’ve become great training partners, great teammates, and an important part of our family.

These blue belts weren’t given— they were earned.

We’re proud of you both and grateful to have been part of your journey. Congratulations, Fletch & Big Chris. Here’s to the next chapter. 👊💙
