It feels like fall today! 🍂🍁🎡
With fall, comes all the fall things for this family, including livestock shows!
My 2 older boys will be showing in both Connell’s show and Othello’s show and I’m choosing to be fully present and available to help them through both.

So Poe’s Place will be closing for the weeks of Sept 7-through the 18th.

We will be back up and running on Tues September 22nd!

FROM A HORSEMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

As you go out today to ride that new horse..or maybe even a horse you’ve been riding for months or years..remember this:

Every time you climb aboard, that horse is still an individual.

One of the first things a horseman does when they sit in the saddle is evaluate.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve ridden that horse a hundred times or if today is the very first ride.

Don’t just get on and immediately start training and educating. Give the horse a moment to show you what they understand.

What do they know?
What do they not know?
Where are they clear?
Where are they confused?

Then you begin to ask.

And ASK is the keyword.

You ask the horse for something—you don’t demand it. You ask, and then you give that horse the opportunity to answer.

Can you move your rib cage?
Can you move your shoulders?
Can you engage your hind leg?
Can you soften?
Can you connect?
Can you move forward and stay balanced?

Every question becomes part of the evaluation.

You ask.
The horse answers.
And a horseman listens to the answer.

Maybe the answer is yes. Maybe it’s no. Maybe the horse is telling you, I don’t understand what you’re asking me.

That’s information.

It also tells you whether pressure that has been added in the past was understood correctly or whether it created confusion.

Don’t mistake confusion for resistance.

This takes a minute. Sometimes it takes a ride. Sometimes it may take two or three rides before the entire picture becomes clear.

But once you’ve gathered the information through evaluation, you’re ready to begin the process.

One step at a time.

A horse has an open mind. We just have to give them the opportunity to communicate with us.

Before we expect them to listen to us, we need to learn how to listen to them.

ASK is the beginning of the conversation.
The horse’s response is the answer.
Horsemanship is knowing how to read it.
