The past 6 months have been an Odyssey of sorts for me.
It’s taken the form of running races. Ultramarathons.
I wanted to do four in the span of six months, which considering my training, was borderline but doable.
This is the highlight reel. What I don’t have photos of is the struggle that is training for an ultra marathon. The 4AM wake-up’s to do speed work, threshold workouts, long runs, easy runs, recovery runs, mobility, strength training, yoga, etc.
Not all on the same day of course! But these are just some of the workouts that have made up an important part of my day to day for the past year and a half.
It’s important that I get in this training before I go to my job as a golf coach/instructor, which I also take seriously.
There is some thought that these two disciplines don’t work together. That you can’t run and play golf. That isn’t my experience. If one trains intentionally and intelligently, then pursuing both is possible and even very rewarding. I feel that I’m a much better coach, athlete, and person for engaging in both.
Working with a coach is also key. Thanks Catamount Running for all of the guidance and support on this journey. You’re not only a legend in the game, but an amazing human. Hopefully many more to come.
Also, reflecting back on these races, the connection with others is the best, most fulfilling parts of it all.
Yes, I enjoy pushing the my limits and finding the edge of my own personal boundaries. But there’s no way it would be the same without the people I have met along the way.
Thanks Lars Peterson for your help during Black Canyon and letting me pace for you during WSER 🙌
Thanks Jordan Webb for your friendship and reconnecting after all these years. We’ve both come a long way since our LHS Cross Country days.
Thanks Mary Childers Morrison and Shannon Morrison for the hugs at the finish line even though I was a sweaty mess 😆 ❤️
Thanks Joe DiChiara for allowing me to be a part of the team 🙏
Here’s to choosing your struggle and working hard for it 💪🏃🧱
