Hello, and welcome!
I’m Heidi Curtis, a Certified Infant Swimming Resource Instructor. I’ve been teaching children survival swimming skills for six years, and it has been, by far, the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. Whether you’re new here or you’ve been following along for a while, you may not know how my ISR journey began.
🌊How I Discovered ISR:
When my daughter was about two years old, I began looking for swim lessons. We didn’t have a pool, but I knew we would eventually spend time around friends and family who did, and I wanted her to have the skills to be safe in the water.
I first tried a “mommy and me” swim class through a local recreation program. After just a couple of lessons, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for the results I was hoping to see. When I shared my experience with a friend, she recommended ISR.
I wasn’t very familiar with ISR at the time, so I started researching it—and I immediately knew it was exactly what I had been looking for. The entire experience, from start to finish, was incredible: the instructor, the skills my daughter was learning, and the way she developed into a confident, safe swimmer. It was truly the best investment ever.
🌊The Path to Becoming an Instructor:
After such a positive experience, I knew I wanted to become an ISR instructor myself. I applied to the training program for years, but the town I lived in already had plenty of instructors. Even so, I never gave up. I waited patiently until the opportunity could become a reality.
During that season of waiting, I took a job at my daughter’s school—another incredible opportunity I will always be grateful for. I truly believe that experience helped shape me into the instructor I am today.
Working with children taught me to meet them where they are, not where I think they should be. There is no “one size fits all” approach when it comes to children. Each child is different, unique, and amazing in their own way—exactly as they are meant to be.
🌊A New Chapter:
A few years later, life changed, and I found myself navigating single motherhood. More than ever, I knew becoming an ISR instructor would be one of the best gifts I could give myself and my child during that transition.
I wanted meaningful work that fit her schedule and still allowed us to spend time together. After relocating to a different town, I reapplied to the training program—and this time, I was accepted.
To say I was excited is an understatement. I was beginning a new journey doing something deeply important, something I was passionate about, and something I had seen firsthand produce incredible results.
🌊Why I Still Love This Work:
Now, six years later, I am still just as passionate about what I do. I still get excited when my students master a new skill. I still believe in meeting children exactly where they are.
And if that means ribbiting like a frog while floating or offering knuckles instead of my go-to high five, I am absolutely here for it.
🌊A Little More About Me:
When I’m not in the water, you’ll usually find me in the kitchen cooking or baking, cheering on my daughter at her volleyball games, or making sure the dog has reached his treat quota for the day.
