The carrot on the stick is up to you. You’re not too old and it’s not too late. You are fully capable IF you want it bad enough. Bad enough to cut the s**t; suck it up; be willing to sacrifice; and get comfortable being uncomfortable. Those are all choices. And it’s also a choice to throw it all away and live with regret for the rest of your life over what could’ve, should’ve, would’ve been had you done the work.

Nothing is free. No entitlement. You want soccer gear, tournaments, etc? Work for it.
He has several jobs besides his school work and sports performances. He also has habits to track and work/chores around the house. I pay him for accomplishments and achievements as well. Sports are a privilege, be grateful to be able to participate and work hard to show your parents you’re grateful they allow you to, they drive you around and pay for you.
