[You can always tell it’s the “final haul” when the pack is loaded with the skin and skull because they’re the least important part of the animal and always the last to be packed out.]⁣

Moments of a hunt like the one captured in this photo are meaningful and hard earned. To me, this image encapsulates “the end” of a hunt and does it perfectly. For those that don’t hunt, the “end” of a hunt signifies the acquisition of an abundance of rich meat for the upcoming winter, of beautiful antlers to decorate the fireplace… and without a doubt, that your last many days have been lived out to the fullest.⁣

We hunt for a million reasons but the most important reason for me, is that it allows our minds and bodies to truly breathe. Don’t believe me? Read ’s book “The Comfort Crisis” and he’ll absolutely prove it to you. ⁣

This particular outing was a classic New England moose hunt that took place in northern Maine (not one September ago) and is a hunt that had entirely consumed my mind since I was a young boy growing up in Connecticut. A real dream come true. ⁣
⁣
A moose lost its life on this trip and for that I’m forever grateful. If you must know, this bull was nearing 11 years old, which is to say he probably had but a few winters left. The meat is some of the finest I’ve ever eaten (but hunters know how that goes). ⁣
⁣
Spend your days chasing the light, carry your quarry out on your back, and share the meat with those that you love. Never will those be moments of regret.
