As we posted last night, the evening took a scary turn during the Modlite feature at Mercer.
On lap 2, Ken Downey in the #41 modlite was involved in a serious multi-car crash that sent his car end over end and coming to rest upside down. It was one of those moments that reminds everyone in racing just how quickly everything can change!
But the most important message from last night is this: SAFETY MATTERS.
Every time Ken climbs into the race car, he makes sure his safety gear is right—his helmet, harness, HANS device, and all required safety equipment. Last night proved exactly why that attention to detail is so important.
After a crash that looked as bad as it did, we are incredibly grateful to say that Ken walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The #41 car, unfortunately, did not fare nearly as well. 🏁
Cars can be repaired and rebuilt. Drivers cannot be replaced.
We want to thank our teammates and racing IRP family—Chris Iler, Brad Isenhart, Jake Isenhart, and Tim Volzer—for being there immediately, along with the staff at Mercer Raceway for their quick response, and the EMS crew for checking Ken over and ensuring he was okay.
To every driver who straps into a race car: never take safety for granted. Take the extra minute. Double-check every nut and bolt. Make sure your equipment is secure. Strap in correctly. Wear the HANS. Do it every single time.
Last night was a powerful reminder of why those steps matter.
The car may be hurting today, but thankfully Ken is okay—and that is one checkered flag we are very grateful to take. ❤️🏁
