Karate Institute Of Mentor The Karate Institute of Mentor teaches martial arts programs for Lil' Dragons (3-4), Jr. Dragons (5-6), Junior Warriors (7-12), Teens and Adults.

The Karate Institute of Mentor provides a variety of programs for people of all ages. Instruction in the martial arts is primarily instruction in self-defense. With children, we emphasize the skills needed to avoid bullies, threatening strangers, and other unsafe situations. We teach the children the basics of self-defense by developing awareness of their surroundings, recognizing the need to keep

strangers outside their boundaries for safety and comfort, and being prepared to combat any attempts at violence if necessary. We also believe that a confident child is a much safer child. Our children's programs develop a child's body, mind, and spirit in order to give each student a chance for a safer, happier, and more successful life. Our adult programs share many of the same characteristics. In today's world, the ability to defend oneself is certainly very important to consider. Knowing how to carry yourself and making good choices can be key to avoiding threatening situations. The Kajukenpo karate program we provide the skills necessary to feel more confident about the personal safety of yourself and your family. But the benefits don't stop there. Our program is designed to benefit the mind, body, and spirit for a better life every day. Kajukenpo is an American Martial Art that maintains traditional values for its practitioners. The development of positive attitudes, self-discipline, self-defense, and leadership skills. Like its parent system KAJUKENBO, Kajukenpo is an eclectic system of martial arts comprising of KArate, JUdo / JUjitsu, and KENPO. Congratulations to Sensei's Jesse Brink and Andrew Suszek placing at the Bushido Open Tournament. Special Congrats to Timmy Cantrell and Malia Holmes showing their warrior spirit taking 1st and 2nd place in sparring. Both had very competitiom.

After 45 years of teaching martial arts in Mentor, Ohio, Mercedes and I have decided it is time to step back from our active roles at the dojo. It has been an incredible journey filled with dedication, growth, and countless memories shared with students, families, and the community.

The dojo will continue under the capable leadership of Jesse Brink, Andrew Suszek, and Kelly Cunningham, who have taken ownership of the Mentor Karate Institute. Their passion, skill, and commitment to the art ensure that the legacy and spirit of the dojo will continue to thrive for years to come.

While our roles will be more limited moving forward, we will remain involved in the dojo’s affairs and continue to support its mission and students in meaningful ways.

We are also excited to share that the Mentor Karate Institute will be moving to a new location in Mentor-on-the-Lake at the beginning of March 2026. The new location will be at 5939 Andrews Rd. This new chapter marks an exciting evolution for the dojo and the community it serves.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. The future of the Mentor Karate Institute is bright, and we look forward to seeing it continue to grow and inspire.
