Why is the pool cloudy?
Bring new to pool care, I have been taking tests weekly to make sure my levels are correct. During this process, the pool store instructed me to add 88lbs of calcium to the pool. A necessary component for the pool chemistry to protect the liner, water lines, pump and salt cell.
Our pool has a fiber glass liner. This matters in this case because this liner style does not exchange calcium through the pool walls in the same way other styles of pools do. This means that the 88lbs I was instructed to add was double the amount I need. Therefore the excess calcium is suspended in the water giving the cloudy appearance. This was something I learned alongside the person who had given me the instruction originally.
How to fix it?
There are two options. 1. a lot of chemical treatments and about 4 weeks of circulation. 2. Drain water and fresh fill to dilute it.
What’s my plan?
In an attempt to not shut the pool down any longer than absolutely necessary, I’m pooling (no pun intended) my resources and trying to time this with the weather. I’m going to drain the pool down about 1/4 of the way and dump fresh water back in to dilute the calcium and then rebalance the other components. Ideally, the draining happens over night with an early morning fill. I’ll need 4 hours of circulation and then the gate will be open for swimmers that same day. I’ll fire up the heater to take the chill off while Mother Nature helps warm the water back up too.
I feel it’s important for you to know the pool is 100% chemically safe for kids to swim in. There is no concern in that regard. So as long as swimmers and families are comfortable with the cloudy appearance, please come swim. It actually is so helpful for pools to be swam in regularly.
Look here for updates on when this happens and when the gates are closed and reopened while we do it. Again, trying to minimally disrupt prime swim time while also maintaining the safety of the space. Thank you for your grace as I work to clear the water and continue to learn all the ins and outs of pool maintenance.
