IT'S NATURE....
The coming Solstice reminds us that, ironically, humans are changing natural systems creating "climate anxiety", while it is nature that heals us. Psychologists and conservation biologists document an array of benefits from time in nature. These benefits (and the opposite, the destructive effects of isolation from nature) demonstrate our intimate connection, so intimate that we are inseparable.
Contact with nature increases our sense of purpose, researchers at the University of Washington report. Engagement with nature reduces mental stress, enhances well-being and happiness, engenders positive moods and improves social relationships. And experience in nature enhances cognitive performance. And nature sensitizes us - and we become less likely to participate in the destruction of ecosystems. But it takes time - check out Ecopsychology: How Immersion in Nature Benefits Your Health, published by Yale.
Here, our gardening and landscaping is about enhancing experience in nature by planting areas creating “rooms” providing close-up views of nature – it is not just the plants, it’s ground bees (bumble bees), honey bees, orchard bees, butterflies, moths, spiders, and so many others that live among them, including an incredible variety of birds, gophers and fox (because our plants provide hiding spaces) that call the Stanford Inn & Resort home. And we are so fortunate to be surrounded by forests, water, trails and beaches...all of which provide opportunities for true connection to nature.
Catch your breath and celebrate nature here, before the Holiday. Book Give yourself a "natural" break! Or get out there, wherever you are.
