Upon the initial shot, the buck dropped to the ground and kicked for several minutes. The shot on this buck was high and deflected out near the spine. The buck eventually got up and walked off, but appeared not to have full strength of its back legs. Judson tracked him 200 yards and jumped him. We tracked him to his second bed (approximately another 100 yards), where the hunter was able to dispatch the buck. We are state certified, so the hunter was allowed to dispatch the buck after normal shooting hours using the weapon of season.

Exposing kids to hunting at such young ages always increases room for error. In the past week, this is the second time one of my kids needed Judson. this is my 6 yr old’s first doe and she was shot at 60 yards. The hit was high and deflected out of the bottom of her stomach. There was blood at the initial shot site, but zero blood after that. I jumped her at 200 yards. Temperatures were extremely warm, so I tracked her sooner than I normally would. She expired at 300 yards.

This was our 3rd track of the year, but ended in Judson’s first recovery of 2022. Turned out it was for my own daughter. It was her first buck, but I don’t think she’ll ever forget the track.
