The all-tackle world record musky is 67 pounds 8 ounces, caught by Cal Johnson in 1949, while the current IGFA length record is 54.33 inches, caught by Art Weston in 2024
All-Tackle Weight Record
The heaviest musky ever officially recognized by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is Cal Johnson’s 67-pound 8-ounce fish, caught in July 1949 at Lac Courte Oreilles near Hayward, Wisconsin. This fish has held the record for nearly 70 years and is displayed as a skin mount at Moccasin Bar in Hayward, Wisconsin. While other muskies, such as Louie Spray’s 69-pound 11-ounce fish, were heavier, they were disqualified by the IGFA due to rule violations, including the fish being shot during capture, which was prohibited
Other notable record-class muskies include Kenneth O’Brien’s 65-pound fish from Ontario in 1988, Joe Seeberger’s 58-pound musky, and Gene Borucki’s 56-pound 7-ounce catch, demonstrating that trophy muskies are often caught trolling in the fall months using a variety of lures and line strengths
IGFA Length Record
The current IGFA all-tackle length world record was set by Art Weston, who caught a 54.33-inch (138 cm) musky on Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota, on October 29, 2024. Weston, a renowned record-chasing angler with nearly 40 active IGFA records, carefully measured the fish using an IGFA-approved device before releasing it. This catch surpassed the previous length record of 53 inches and is pending official certification by the IGFA.
