Nobody films the 5:30 mornings. Nobody claps for the two hundredth swing. That is exactly why they count.

The part most parents get backwards: the pressure that helps your kid is the pressure already on the field. The pressure you add from the stands is the part that hurts.

Here's what's actually happening in a close game. Dopamine and noradrenaline sharpen focus and attention. Cortisol, at moderate levels, gets the body ready to perform. That's the inverted-U researchers have been describing since 1908: a little arousal helps, too much wrecks it. Past that peak the prefrontal cortex, the part that makes decisions, is the first thing to go offline.

Which is why a kid who is nervous competes well, and a kid who is scared of disappointing you does not.

None of this makes practice optional. Reps are where the skill gets built. Competition is where a kid learns to reach for it while it's hard.

The highlight reel and the actual footage are two different movies.

Every one of these has happened to somebody on your team this season. The batting practice bomb nobody saw. The one at bat nobody got on video. The socks that stay in the bag between games and stay there on purpose.

Two fractured bones. Fourth and fifth metacarpal. And he finished the game. 🩻⚾

Meet 12-year-old Jett Holland of United Baseball Oklahoma, out of Locust Grove! He got caught in a pickle, slid back into third, and hit the base hard enough to break his glove hand. His coach was still waving him home. Nobody knew until he crossed the plate holding it.

They were a player short, so he went back out. First pitch of the next inning, a rocket to center field, and he caught it. Weeks later, at a game he was only supposed to watch, his family found him in right field wearing somebody else's glove on the wrong hand.

Last season it was the other wrist, in football. As his dad puts it, he ran out of hands.

Two fractured bones in his glove hand. And he was still on base. 🩻⚾

Meet 12-year-old Jett Holland of United Baseball Oklahoma, out of Locust Grove! He slid back into third and hit the base hard enough to break two metacarpals. Nobody in that dugout knew. A teammate’s mom, who happens to be a nurse, wrapped his hand up and asked if he could play. According to his parents, it was never even a question.

Both of these players were on the same roster in the same age group.

Nothing here is dramatic. One alarm, one cage session, one notebook, one net in the backyard after a loss. None of it looked like a decision at the time and all of it was.

The parents in the stands and the players in the dugout are living completely different weekends and somehow describing the same one. The glove nobody touches is a real rule in a real house right now.
