🐻 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓 🐻
Last night, R***e Police officers responded to several bear-related calls in our community.
Colorado is bear country, and while seeing wildlife can be exciting, bears that find an easy meal around homes often return again and again. Those repeated encounters can become dangerous for both people and bears.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱:
✅ Secure your trash. Keep garbage inside a garage or shed until the morning of pickup.
✅ Protect chickens, ducks, and other livestock. A sturdy enclosure with electric fencing is one of the best deterrents for bears.
✅ Remove other food sources. Pet food, birdseed, grills with grease, and even dirty trash cans can attract bears.
✅ Close garage doors and lower-level windows at night whenever possible.
✅ If a bear visits your yard, never approach it. From a safe location, make loud noises by yelling, clapping, or using a whistle to encourage it to leave. Always give the bear a clear escape route.
🚫 Never intentionally feed a bear. Once a bear learns that neighborhoods provide easy food, it often returns. Sadly, bears that become comfortable around people sometimes have to be relocated or euthanized.
By removing attractants and securing our homes, we can help protect our pets, livestock, neighbors, and Colorado's black bears.
