📖 Have you read Ron Hilkey’s book “Two Gone Guys”?

This summer, Sable Mountain Outfitters is offering a special guided horseback ride to Sable Lake — one of the locations connected to the true story of the two missing cowboys from the 1930s.
Sable Lake was part of the search described in the book, and it’s a beautiful spot tucked away in the Flat Tops Wilderness.

Even better — Ron Hilkey will be at the trailhead to visit, answer questions, and sign books before the ride.

It’s a fun way to experience a piece of local history on horseback while enjoying some incredible country.

🐎 Ride Dates

Over 400 people showed up this week to defend science-based wildlife management in Colorado.

I traveled across the state to attend the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission meeting, where the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission—whose members are appointed by the Governor—voted 6–4 to advance the fur ban petition, despite the recommendations of CPW’s Director, staff, wildlife biologists, and the majority of those in attendance who spoke in opposition to the ban. Not to mention that Denver voters rejected a similar fur ban last fall, with about 58% voting against it.

Wildlife management should be based on science and led by trained wildlife professionals—not politics.

I also have to say that I am incredibly proud to be from Rio Blanco County.
We had representation from both of our communities—Meeker and Rangely—including County Commissioners, members of our Sheriff’s Office, and many outfitters, ranchers, landowners, and sportsmen who took time away from work, families, and responsibilities at home to make their voices heard. Several are missing from the photo.

A sincere thank you to the friends, family, and neighbors back home who fed animals, covered chores, and kept things running so many of us could attend. It truly takes all of us.

This was just one meeting. There will be many more. If you care about the future of wildlife management, we must continue showing up, staying involved, and making our voices heard.

If you’d like to help or want to know how to get involved, please reach out to me.

Colorado Sun Calls It What It Was — “Embarrassing & Out of Control”
The Colorado Sun’s Tracy Ross has written one of the most thorough and damning recaps of the March 4th & 5th CPW Commission meetings — and the headline alone says everything. This is required reading.
Retired game warden Dean Riggs, with over 30 years of agency experience, said he had “never seen a more dysfunctional running of a meeting” and called what he witnessed “incredibly out of control.”
And it didn’t get better on Day 2. Former Commissioner and rancher Marie Haskett summed it up perfectly: “Wow. That’s the only word I can think of to say about yesterday. It was also embarrassing today. You added to confusion around the motion, so you go behind closed doors to figure out what happened. Where’s the transparency?”
Perhaps the most telling moment of the entire two days came from rancher Han Smith of the Rusty Spurr Ranch in Kremmling, who told the commission directly: “I’ve seen better demonstrations of parliamentary procedure and objectivity in the average 4-H meeting. Your actions and behavior yesterday did more to destroy trust than any single action in the history of CPW or this commission.”
Even commissioners themselves were lost. Commissioner Dallas May said he “couldn’t in good conscience vote for it without knowing the exceptions” — yet the vote pushed through anyway.
This was not a mandate. This was not a clean process. This was dysfunction on full display — and it is being driven by a coordinated agenda from the top down, now advancing through the legislature via House Bill 26-1323.
Read the Colorado Sun article. Share it widely. The people of Colorado deserve to know exactly what happened in that room. https://coloradosun.com/2026/03/06/parks-and-wildlife-commission-accepts-petition-to-ban-colorado-fur-sales-in-embarrassing-out-of-control-meeting/
