On October 9, ATF stopped enforcing the NFA prior-approval and registration steps for suppressor transfers. The $200 tax had already gone to $0 on January 1.

What did not change: state law.

Ohio's suppressor exception (ORC 2923.17(C)(5)) is written for owners who hold a federally registered suppressor. New buyers can no longer complete that registration — so the statute is untested for new purchases. That is why we mark Ohio "Carve-out in flux," not legal.

15 states are written the way Ohio is. 10 prohibit civilian suppressors outright. 26 are clean under state law.

The federal paperwork is gone. State law is the whole game now.

Suppressor tax: $0 since Jan 1. Since Oct 9, the ATF has stopped enforcing NFA registration on new purchases — and 15 states tie their exception to that registration, which new buyers can no longer complete.

December 2, the Supreme Court hears the AR-15 case — one hour, two consolidated ban challenges: Viramontes v. Cook County (IL) and Grant v. Higgins (CT). The question: does the Second Amendment protect the right to own AR-15 platform ri**es?

Ohio has no "assault weapon" ban today. A win keeps it that way — and could strike down the bans in the roughly dozen states that have them. New Jersey already asked the Court for a do-over after losing 10–5; magazine limits are next in line. The ban states file their briefs October 21.

Big news for Ohio shooters! On Oct 9, ATF announced it will no longer enforce certain federal registration and approval requirements for suppressors. The $200 tax stamp is already gone.

Important: Ohio law has not changed. Suppressors are still classified as dangerous ordnance here, so the NFA registration process remains the compliant path for now. Form 4473 is still required, and we'll continue handling the paperwork needed for Ohio customers.

Suppressors are available at Range 42 / Workman Fi****ms. We're watching Ohio Senate Bill 214 closely and will update you as soon as state law changes.

Your safety and compliance are our priority. Questions? Stop in or give us a call.

General information, not legal advice - confirm current requirements before purchasing or transferring an NFA item.

🚨 Important Update for Ohio Gun Owners & Customers 🚨

Effective October 9, 2026, the ATF has announced it will no longer enforce certain National Fi****ms Act (NFA) requirements for short-barreled ri**es (SBRs), short-barreled sh****ns (SBSs), suppressors/silencers, and “any other weapons” (AOWs).

What this means federally: • No prior ATF approval (Form 1 or Form 4) required before making or transferring these items • No mandatory registration in the National Fi****ms Registration and Transfer Record • $0 tax remains in effect • Voluntary registration is still available if you want it

What has NOT changed: • Machine guns and destructive devices remain fully regulated under the NFA (including the $200 tax) • Form 4473 and NICS background checks are still required • Prohibited persons are still prohibited • Interstate transport of SBRs and SBSs may still involve Form 20 requirements

Ohio state law is different and still applies.

Under Ohio Revised Code, suppressors and “sawed-off” fi****ms (which include most SBRs and SBSs) are classified as “dangerous ordnance.” Possessing them without a qualifying exemption is a fifth-degree felony.

The primary civilian exemption requires the item to be registered in the federal NFRTR. Because ATF is no longer requiring that registration, an unregistered suppressor, SBR, or SBS that is fine under the new federal enforcement policy may still violate Ohio law.

Senate Bill 214, which would remove suppressors from the dangerous ordnance definition, passed the Ohio Senate but has not yet become law.

Bottom line for Ohio customers: Federal non-enforcement does not automatically make these items legal to possess in Ohio without registration. Voluntary federal registration remains the clearest path to the state exemption under current law. Always confirm the latest status of pending legislation and consult a qualified Ohio attorney before making or transferring these items.

This is not legal advice. Laws and enforcement can change. When in doubt, ask a lawyer.
