St. Francis Girls Basketball

St. Francis Girls Basketball Saints Girls basketball is a recreational league played on Sunday’s from October thru February at St. Joe's gym in Medford. St.

Francis CYO Basketball has provided a safe and fun learning environment for the youth of the parish for decades. The basketball program stresses, an "all are welcome" and "all play" philosophy. The league is made possible by a wide range of volunteers from scorekeepers, to coaches, to the referees and coordinators. The league hopes to foster a learning environment that focuses on Christian values

through sportsmanship, teamwork and the fundamentals of basketball. While there is competition with winners and losers of games and a playoff round, the focus is for the girls to have fun and play in a safe environment. The in-house league runs from October - March on Sundays.

Congratulations to Saints Girls Basketball parent Ari Barbanell who was designated a "Hero Among Us" earlier this month at a Celtics game! Ari was honored by the Boston Celtics for her work as a local nonprofit leader. Her daughter Ellie {grade 7} plays in our inhouse and travel programs.

Ari Barbanell has been fighting homelessness through her work for more than a decade.

Coach Steve will be hosting a skills and drills clinic tonight for girls in grades 2 and 3. The session will run from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM at St. Joe's.

Steve will focus on fundamental skills, including shooting, passing, and dribbling. This will be a great opportunity for 2nd graders to get acclimated to playing on a full court.

The clinic is free of charge and no registration is required. If your daughter is interested in participating, please simply join us at the gym.

I am pleased to inform you that Coach Steve and the Saints Girls Basketball program have been selected by the Executive Committee of Board 27 of Basketball Officials to receive the Edward M. "Smokey" Kelleher Award for the 2025-2026 season. This award is presented to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the game of basketball. The Award will be presented at their Annual Banquet and Brunch on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The award’s namesake, Edward M. "Smokey" Kelleher, was the founder of IAABO (International Association of Approved Basketball Officials) Board #27. He served as the first Secretary-Treasurer of the Eastern Massachusetts Board of Approved Basketball Officials #27 and was a member of the National Board of Approved Basketball Officials. Additionally, he served two terms as the first President of IAABO.
