πŸ’ Ever wonder how LoConte Rink gets ready for hockey season? 🧊
There’s a LOT that goes into getting the ice ready before our players ever step onto the rink! πŸ’™

Starting in April, the rink is drained and all of the old paint is washed off β€” a process that takes about 48 hours with a specialized machine.

From there:

🧽 The boards are thoroughly washed.
❄️ The compressors run for several days, slowly bringing the rink temperature down to around 12Β°F.
πŸ’¦ The ice-making process begins with careful, methodical flooding using hoses.
🎨 Once there’s a solid layer of ice, the white base is added, followed by the logos and markings.
πŸ”΅πŸ”΄ The colored lines are sprayed in layers with a mister so they’re thick and vibrant enough to withstand additional flooding.
🧊 Over roughly five days, layer after layer of water is added while the temperature is carefully adjusted.
🚜 Once the ice is strong enough for the Zamboni, the final layers are built up and finished.

And just like that the ice is ready! πŸ’πŸ₯…

A tremendous amount of time, patience and work goes into preparing LoConte Rink for another hockey season.

πŸ‘ A big THANK YOU to LoConte Rink Facility Coordinator John Curley, Supervisor Rick Capraro, and ALL of the Medford Recreation Rink staff for all the work they put in behind the scenes to get the rink ready for our players and community.

We appreciate everything you do! πŸ’™πŸ€
