If you ever find yourself in the Pontevedra area of Northern whether from hiking the or vacationing, please do not miss visiting the . In 1980 these islands were declared a protected . Currently you can only visit by reservation as part of a group of 1600-1800 daily visitors to the islands. I visited Do Faro and Monteagudo, which appear to be the primary islands visited by tourists, perhaps due to the plentiful hiking trails, kayaking and other aquatic activities, lighthouses(Do Faro), and world-class beaches, including the famous Rodas beach on Monteagudo. Rodas Beach was once chosen by the Guardian newspaper as the world's best beach.
You can reach the Cies Islands by ferry from Vigo, Baiona, and Cangas. You will need to bring out your trash as there are few trash bins on these beautiful, protected islands.
