We want to share some interesting facts about our rescues.
We have several special needs horses. Two in particular are Hank and Nikki, whom are bonded pasture friends.
Hank is estimated to be 35 to 40 yrs of age. Due to his age and previous neglect, his teeth are in poor condition and chewing grass and hay is difficult for him.
Nikki is estimated to be about 15 years old and suffers from insulin resistance. For that reason, she needs to be on a dry lot and her time on grass strictly limited.
Both horses do get turnout time in the grassy field here, but it's usually late at night when it's cooler and for very short periods of time.
Hank gets soaked hay pellets several times a day and all the soaked feed he can handle. Nikki is on a strict low starch grain. Sugar intake is carefully watched.
Both are favorites of everyone who comes to visit them as they are very loving and happy to be living their life out together.
We posted signs on roadside fences that state, "please do not feed the animals". We know well meaning people think the horses may be hungry and throw whole carrots, apples and even candy bars out in the pasture, not realizing these items can be choking hazards.
We do appreciate people who are concerned and understand that they may not be aware of the horses conditions and the need for them to be on a dry lot with little grass and restricted treats.
