Just because Dorsi owns a squat wedge doesn’t mean she uses it. As far as she’s concerned, it’s a perfectly good pillow.

I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had over the years with people who already owned everything they needed to get stronger.

The treadmill became a clothing rack. The dumbbells collected dust in the basement. Resistance bands ended up in a junk drawer, and the rowing machine slowly disappeared behind Christmas decorations.

The equipment wasn’t broken, it just wasn’t being used.

The hardest part has never been buying the equipment. It’s finding a way to keep using it after the excitement wears off and life gets in the way.

Equipment can’t tell you whether your knee is ready to squat today, whether your shoulder needs a different movement, or whether you’re lifting a heavy enough dumbbell for that particular muscle. It can’t reassure you after surgery, help you navigate perimenopause, or remind you that one bad week doesn’t erase months of progress.

Just because you OWN it doesn’t mean you’ll USE it. The equipment isn’t what creates results, the habits you build around it do.

Dorsi hasn’t figured that out yet. Fortunately for her, being cute counts for A LOT around here.

Seven years ago, I coached Portia Velazquez in soccer. This week, she reached out because she wants to get back into soccer shape for her senior year, and she remembered that I was the coach who pushed her, believed in her, and made training fun. That message meant more to me than she probably realizes.

One of the greatest parts of coaching across different sports, ages, and stages of life is getting to see the impact that lasts long after a season ends. Athletes may not remember every drill, every score, or every practice, but they remember the people who made them feel capable and showed them that they could do more than they thought.

I believe it is incredibly important for young female athletes to have strong women they can look up to, trust, and come back to when they need guidance. I had coaches who shaped my own athletic career, and being that person for another young woman is something I will never take lightly.

Portia walked into AUF this week, met Dorsi, and got right back to work. I am so glad she reached out, and I am even more grateful that after all these years, she still knew exactly who she wanted in her corner. This is so much bigger than a workout, and it is exactly why I coach.

One of the coolest parts about owning a gym is realizing that the people you see at 5:30 in the morning somehow become part of every other piece of your life, too. Hannah is one of my workout warriors three mornings a week, but she also happens to be Dorsi’s groomer, which made her the obvious choice when I decided I wanted Dorsi to match my hair on my wedding day.

I already knew Hannah was talented, but watching her bring this vision to life somehow exceeded every expectation I had. She has this incredible ability to take an idea that exists only in someone else’s head and turn it into something even better. The feather extensions were a complete surprise, and the fact that she matched them so perfectly to Dorsi’s rainbow paws still blows my mind.

Beth stepped in as honorary assistant and photographer for the morning, capturing all of the chaos and making sure not a single moment was missed. Between the two of them, Dorsi’s hair and makeup trial was an absolute success.

Mr. Mike is still processing just how much rainbow can exist in one world, but the feathers are definitely growing on him. April can’t get here fast enough. 🌈🐾

We had been talking about visiting horses for weeks. Sam and Kyle were so excited that we even worked a horse themed exercise into one of our workouts to get ready. When our plans unexpectedly fell through this morning, I sent out a 911 horse emergency text to my best friend, Emily.

She was buried at work, the torrential rain had completely thrown the barn’s schedule and flow, and somehow she still pulled this off. She knows Kyle and Sam through AUF and wanted to make sure they didn’t miss out. I’m so grateful she did.

We had Clean Eatz delivered for lunch before heading over to Heritage Acres, where we spent the afternoon meeting the horses, learning all of their names, handing out plenty of treats, and even watching one get its workout in on the treadmill. (We loved seeing that horses also have to workout)

The work we do at AUF has never really been about the gym itself. Strength training is simply the tool that allows us to get out into the world, try new things, and say yes to experiences like today. We train so carrying a bucket full of horse treats is easy, walking around a farm for an afternoon feels effortless, and saying yes to new adventures isn’t limited by what our bodies can or can’t do.

That’s what made today so special. It wasn’t just spending time with the horses, it was watching Kyle and Sam connect with them. Animals have a way of slowing everything down. They don’t care who you are, what challenges you have, or whether you communicate differently. Hand them a bucket of treats, give them a few quiet moments together, and a connection happens that’s hard to put into words. Those moments of connection are every bit as important as the work we do in the gym.

A huge thank you to Emily Jefferson for making today happen, and to everyone at Heritage Acres for welcoming us into your world. Thank you for giving Kyle and Sam an afternoon they’ll be talking about for a long time. ❤️💪🌈

One hundred pounds is heavy.

It’s an amount most people would struggle to carry across a room, let alone carry around every single day. When you stop and think about it that way, it’s hard to wrap your head around what losing more than 100 pounds really means.

Steph has done exactly that.

One hundred pounds isn’t just a number on a scale. It’s years of wondering if your body will ever feel like your own again. It’s learning to trust a knee replacement instead of fearing it. It’s walking into a gym when you’re not sure you belong there. It’s showing up twice a week, even when the progress feels slow. It’s deciding that your circumstances don’t get to make your decisions for you.

Steph has lost more than 100 pounds, and that’s an incredible accomplishment. Losing weight is hard. Losing it in your 50s after a knee replacement is even harder. Those challenges never disappeared. She just refused to let them define what she was capable of.

Before/after photos are easy to celebrate because they show the result. They don’t show the hundreds of workouts it took to get there, or all of the days that looked completely ordinary. That’s why I’ll always come back to strength training. The scale tells part of Steph’s story. Her strength tells the rest; more than 100 pounds came off, but I don’t think that’s the greatest thing she gained.

She gained strength, confidence, she built a body that moves better, feels better, and will continue to serve her long after the excitement of this major weight loss milestone fades.

Steph, I couldn’t be happier for you. More than 100 pounds is something very few people will ever accomplish, and you’ve earned every single one of them. I’m grateful I get to be a small part of your story.

To my AUF family…

If you’re still without power, or even water, my door is open.

With outages expected to last through at least Wednesday for many people, I don’t want anyone struggling if I have something that can help. Whether you’re on the schedule this week or not, please stop by if you need anything.

Come grab one of these 5-gallon water jugs, fill a cooler with bullet ice, cool off in the AC, charge your phone or other electronics, take a hot shower, or just sit and catch your breath for a while. If you’re scheduled for a workout, we’ll absolutely get that in too, but if all you need today is a little relief from the heat and the stress, that’s exactly what this space is here.

AUF has always been about more than strength training. It’s about showing up for people when they need it most. ❤️🌈💪

For the last four and a half years, one thing has been guaranteed whenever a holiday rolls around. Susan is showing up dressed for the occasion. She may have an entire closet full of holiday workout gear, but it’ll never rival my racks of holiday outfits. I can always count on her to match my vibe no matter what holiday rolls around. But she probably won’t ever show up in a holiday onesie…. I can’t say the same.

This year feels a little different, though. My word for 2026 has been freedom, and owning AUF has given me more of it than I ever imagined. It’s the freedom to build something that reflects who I am, spend my days doing work I genuinely love, and create the kind of environment I always hoped a gym could be.

The best part is watching my clients find their own version of freedom, too. Freedom to move without pain, freedom to feel strong, freedom to pick up grandkids, travel, hike, play sports, or simply walk through life with more confidence than they had before.

Happy Fourth of July from AUF… and from Susan, who ALWAYS understands the assignment. ❤️🤍💙

Makenna has a big year ahead of her.

After a long high school season, she’s heading straight into a demanding travel ball schedule while navigating everything that comes with being a senior and going through the recruiting process. As a pitcher throwing 59 mph, her arm has already handled a tremendous workload this year, and recently that volume started to catch up with her shoulder.

Rather than waiting for a small issue to become a bigger problem, we’re getting ahead of it now.

Our focus is on building the strength, stability, and durability that will help keep her healthy throughout the season. That means rotator cuff strengthening, shoulder stability work, scapular control, core training, and rotational power development. The goal isn’t just speed. The goal is having the strength, stability, and endurance to maintain that speed through a long high school season, a demanding travel schedule, and everything that comes with being a high-level pitcher.

After evaluating Makenna, I reached out to her travel coach and put together an updated pregame warm-up, stretching, and mobility routine specifically for her. He now has a plan she can use before practices, games, and tournament weekends so we’re all working together to keep her healthy, performing at a high level, and staying on the field.

Softball has always been close to my heart. I played myself and spent years around some incredibly talented softball and baseball coaches early in my career. Those experiences shaped how I coach athletes today and gave me a deep appreciation for what pitchers put their bodies through over the course of a season.

And of course, no AUF training session is complete without a Dorsi parked directly underneath the bench. While Makenna is knocking out Ys, Ts, and Is, Dorsi is keeping a close eye on her form and has already decided she’ll need to see Makenna pitch in person before offering her final assessment.

Makenna has already put in the work to become a talented pitcher. Now we’re making sure she has the strength, stability, and endurance to support the speed she’s worked so hard to develop through a long travel season, a senior year, and the recruiting process. 💪🥎

Happy National Dachshund Day to AUF’s Chief Happiness Officer, Dorsi the Doxie

When I opened Absolute Unit Fitness, I thought I was building a gym. What I actually built was a community, and Dorsi has been at the center of it from day one.

She clocks in before sunrise, greets every client like they’re her favorite person, supervises workouts, keeps morale high, and somehow always knows exactly who needs a little extra love on a hard day.

People tell me all the time they look forward to seeing Dorsi just as much as they look forward to their workout.

She reminds us that strength is about more than the weight on the bar. It’s about connection, consistency, encouragement, and creating a space where people feel seen.

Dorsi is more than our mascot. She’s our Chief Happiness Officer and a huge part of what makes AUF feel like home.

Our unofficial tag line:

Come for the dog. Stay for the strength.

Happy National Dachshund Day to the hardest-working wiener in the business. 🤍
