One simple array of targets can be used to work so many different shooting concepts. Tonight’s student was struggling with trigger confirmation issues after changing from an aftermarket G***k trigger and other parts that turned out to be unsafe and going back up the ladder a bit in both weight and travel to feel comfortable.

We shot this together using all the different levels of trigger input to realize how the dot was acting against the consequences of the present no shoots. Once we had driven that point home we used the same array to Challange each other on all sorts of concepts.

You don’t need a connex full of gear for a great practice. Just a few targets, an understanding of shooting concepts, and a willingness to explore.

Doug and Pattie have been training with us for 5 years. 5! Today’s lesson was an evolution in consequences along with shot calling. The timer beeps. The clay in the thoracic cavity must be broken. You can’t see the clay because the T-shirt has it obscured. Time is a factor like it always is. Shooting positions were varied sort of like a game of horse. I go they go. The no shoots were very tight. We didn’t need many white pasters either. These guys have been putting in work and it shows.

From 15 yards can you hit the clay at all with no time pressure.

If you could could you do it while obscured with clothing.

If yes can you shot call well enough to know you hit the clay and stayed off the no shoots

Once were at that point can you race the clock and do it?

Tale of two targets (there are two here one with bad shots on it photographed from the rear and the second target photographed from the front with much better shooting.

My student tonight was very attentive and dutiful. This is her 4th private lesson ever. I’d estimate her total live rounds fired from a pistol lifetime to be around 1k with half of those coming in our lessons and half being in her own practice.

Like many new shooters she is struggling to manage her micro compact 9mm and often closing her eyes completely during the shot process. There are also the usual grip inefficencies, trigger mismanagement, and visual disengagement that most shooters suffer when they’re new.

Upon discovering her focus issues I started writing control statements on her target. Having to read the statement on target helps with target focus and RDS shooting. It also helps hold her mental focus overall and keeps her much more focused in the shot process.

This was a draw stroke from the appendix position to well controlled pairs watching the dot. Her shooting improved obviously but she began to describe her dot behavior with way more detail.

Things continued to progress from here but this was her first Ah Ha moment.

Figured I’d post it for the benefit of instructors and students alike.
