This is so helpful! Our friends at Oceana Golf Club put together an easy-to-follow breakdown of the most common tournament formats you'll see throughout the golf season 👇👇👇 Check it out below and save it for your next event!
Ever wonder what all those tournament formats actually mean? Throughout the season at Oceana Golf Club, we host a variety of events that use different formats to keep things fun, competitive, and fair. Here's a quick guide to some of the formats you'll see on our calendar:
⛳ Scramble
- What is it? All players on the team hit a shot, then the team *chooses the best shot*. Everyone plays their next shot from that spot and repeats the process until the ball is holed. Commonly incorrectly called "best ball," but that is NOT what it is (see the next format below for the difference).
- Who is it for? Everyone! Scrambles are great for golfers of all skill levels and one of our most popular formats! Beginner-friendly, fast-paced, and encourage teamwork.
- When do we use it? You'll find this format in most all of our fundraising events and the Rotary Club Tournament.
⛳ Best Ball
- What is it? Each player plays their *own ball* for the entire hole. The lowest score among teammates becomes the team's score for that hole.
- Who is it for? Golfers who enjoy both team competition and individual play. This format rewards both teamwork and individual performance.
- When do we use it? Our Joe Foster Open uses the best ball format.
⛳ Alternate Shot
- What is it? Teammates take turns hitting the *same ball* throughout the hole. One player tees off, the other hits the next shot, and so on.
- Who is it for? Golfers with patience. ;) Communication and strategy are key!
- When do we use it? Our Oceana Shuffle event rotates between scramble for 6-holes, best ball for 6-holes, and concludes with alternate shot for the last 6-holes.
⛳ Match Play
- What is it? Instead of counting total strokes, golfers *compete hole-by-hole*. Win more holes than your opponent to win the match. In many match play events, handicaps are used to make competition more equitable, in which the player with the higher handicap receives strokes on the designated handicap holes.
- Who is it for? Golfers who enjoy head-to-head competition, strategy, and a format where one bad hole doesn't ruin your entire round.
- When do we use it? Our Club Championship Tournament uses a match play format.
No matter your experience level, there's a tournament format for everyone. Keep an eye on our event calendar and don't be afraid to try a format you've never played before. Which format is your favorite? 👇👇👇
