It’s incredible that in my 17+ years in the Jiu-Jitsu and Judo community, it never ceases to amaze me that martial arts is a community that transcends cultures, languages, professions, and borders.
This past weekend I made my annual trip to Athens, Georgia to train, learn, and spend time with my friend and mentor Randy McElwee.
For the third consecutive year, Randy welcomed me into his academy—not only to learn on the mats, but also to learn from the culture, leadership, and community he has built around them.
This year I had the opportunity to learn from Alan and Jenni Baker, reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and continue the journey of lifelong learning.
One of my favorite reminders from the trip was a sign hanging in the academy:
“Linking Self Defense to Self Development.”
One of the highlights of the weekend was watching students test and seeing the respect, humility, and community that continue to make martial arts such a unique vehicle for personal growth.
The techniques were valuable.
The friendships were priceless.
The more I learn, the better I can serve the students and families of Good Karma Jiu-Jitsu.
Now it’s time to bring those lessons home.
