Heartbreaker Sled

Heartbreaker Sled Home of the Heartbreaker pulling sled. Built to replace their smaller sled, Heartbreaker 1, it was used by the NWOTPA until being retired in 1995.

Previously owned by the Northwestern Ohio Tractor Pullers Association (NWOTPA), Heartbreaker2 was built in 1974 by an Ohio man named Chuck Ziss. It was used for several years in the National Tractor Pulling Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio, and at the Farm Machinery Show tractor pulls in Louisville, KY. In 1999 the Warren County Antique Tractor Association (WCATA) purchased the sled and former

club member Danny Lusk restored the sled to running condition. Upon completion it became known as "Big Clyde" and became the primary sled used at all of their pulls. Prior to the 2010 season the sled underwent another restoration that added several updates. In 2011 the sled was sold to Justin Collier, who had been operating it for several years, and underwent another round of updates. The first change was to do away with the 292 Chevy gas engine and Massey Ferguson hydrostat. A Cummins engine and Allison automatic transmission now power the sled. A new air, electrical, and hydraulic system were among the many changes made prior to the 2012 season. For 2013 a new drivetrain for the weight box and a hydraulic push down along with several other changes are being added with the goal being to fully modernize the sled and make it reliable for use at pulls anywhere. A new set of low profile scales were also built for the 2013 season.
2014 saw the last round of changes happen. Mostly cosmetic, the sled has new sheet metal and paint for this season.

Good video from last weekends Du Quoin pull. It doesn't show the speeds but several of these tractors were over 17 mph on a 235 ft track with the sled weighing 40,000 lbs and set to load them very early in their run. Pretty amazing how far these tractors have come over the past 5 or so years.

This sled was on its 3rd motor when I bought it and it was worn out. I had the idle set at 1000 rpm and ran 1 1/2 gallons of Lucas in the oil to keep the oil pressure in spec. It was also weak and smoked constantly from oil use. Being air cooled means these engines live a hard life because the majority of their time is spent idling which limits airflow across the heads. Since rebuilt Deutz engines seem to be hit or miss on getting a good one (and $12,000) I went with a low hour combine engine to replace it. It is also 190 horsepower vs the 150 hp tractor engine that was in it. The rear end used to power this sled is geared higher than most (5:57 ratio) so the extra power should help on soft tracks. The only thing usable on the combine engine were the injection pump, exhaust manifold and turbo. Everything else including injector lines, cooling system and cradles off each end of the motor had to be swapped for it to work in the sled. Keeping my fingers crossed this engine will be a good one and last a long time.

Big shout out to the Southern Express Pulling Sled Rental crew for the help with the somewhat unscheduled Allison transmission swap. The original made it 25 seasons and none of us will complain if this one lasts that long. Off to Tunica, MS next week to wrap up the 2024 season.
