From the National Cowboy Museum Archives to the Rocking S Arena. Steer wrestling, often called "bulldogging," dates back to the early 1900s when legendary cowboy Bill Pickett developed the technique while working cattle in Texas. In a matter of seconds, a contestant leaps from horseback onto a running steer and uses strength, timing, and technique to bring the animal to a stop.
