The coaches spent part of today stripping all of the flags and getting equipment inventoried and ready for the upcoming season. (Check out the ball of removed tape on the table!)

Now it's your turn to get ready!

Everyone planning to participate in parade season must have:

✅ A current sports physical on file with the school nurse.
✅ A concussion screening completed.

Concussion screenings are completed at the hospital Physical Therapy Department (enter through the PT entrance on the back side of the hospital)

🗓 Mondays in July (That means there are only two dates left!)

MYTH:
"Color Guard is only about competitions."

FACT:
Some of the best parts of Color Guard happen away from the competition floor.

Yes, we compete - and we give it our all every time. (And we bring home lots of hardware to show for it - 16 first place finishes last season! 🏆)

But we also:
✨ Build friendships
✨ Travel together
✨ Support one another
✨ Create memories
✨ Celebrate accomplishments

And yes - there are also costumes, performance makeup, sequins, glitter, and the excitement of bringing a show to life in front of hundreds in the stands.

Color Guard is a place where athleticism and creativity come together, and memories of a lifetime are made.

"If I missed open gyms, it's too late to join."

FACT:
It's not too late at all! We’d love to have you join us!

Parade season begins the second week of school and is open to everyone. Whether you attended every open gym, one open gym, or none at all, you are still welcome to join.

Color Guard has two teams each season. First is our parade team. Parade season is the perfect opportunity to learn the basics, meet teammates, and discover what Color Guard is all about. There are no cuts, just show up and you’re a part of it!

After our annual debut at the Fall Festival Parade, we roll in to Competition Season. This is when it starts getting real. At the end of Parade season, the coaches will select the Competition Team and we shift into high gear learning our shows and getting ready to start competing the first weekend in December.

💚MYTH vs. FACT: Color Guard Edition💚

MYTH:
"Multiple costumes, warmups, equipment, travel.. I’m sure Color Guard is too expensive to try."

FACT:
We work hard as a team to make participation inexpensive and accessible to everyone regardless of what their financial situation is.

Through quick and easy fundraising efforts, (that don’t require selling items!) our team works together to help cover most of the costs associated with uniforms and equipment. In fact, typically the only expenses students face throughout the season are a $25 pair of dance shoes they will order from Amazon, and then and snacks or mementos they might want to purchase at competitions. (Which are totally optional!)

We believe every student should have the opportunity to participate, compete, and succeed without concern. Team members will work together during the season, eliminating the need to bring personal funds to the table.

One of the things we're most proud of is the commitment our team makes to supporting one another both on and off the floor.

MYTH:
"Color Guard isn't a real sport."

FACT:
Our team trains and practices to compete at the highest level possible, just like any athletic team. It’s not easy, and there are many exhausting hours that go into that short 3 minute show that is enjoyed from the stands.

Our practices include:
✔️Conditioning
✔️Strength and endurance
✔️Dance technique
✔️Equipment skills
✔️Teamwork and growth

Every show you see represents months of preparation and hard work. Unlike traditional sports, we don’t have a bench to pull from, every team member is vital and involved 100% of the time.

Being a part of our team means challenging yourself physically, mentally, and creatively.

"You need dance or flag experience to join Color Guard."

FACT:
Most of our team started with little or no dance or flag experience.

In fact, what we look for the most is not experience or natural ability!

What matters most is:
✔ Positive attitude
✔ Willingness to learn
✔ Coachability
✔ Being a good teammate

Our parade season is designed to help everyone learn new skills and see what it’s like being a part of the team.

Everyone starts somewhere, and most of our team members were complete beginners when they first joined.

MYTH:
"Color Guard is just waving a flag."

FACT:
Color Guard combines dance, athleticism, teamwork, performance, and storytelling.

Athletes perform choreographed routines to music while using flags to bring a show to life and communicate emotion, energy, and meaning to an audience.

We compete throughout Illinois under IDTA, which is affiliated with and recognized by IHSA, and perform in front of judges who evaluate technique, precision, performance quality, and overall effect.

Color Guard is a sport, an art form, and a team experience all rolled into one.

Cue MYTH vs. FACT: Color Guard Edition! We are excited to give a closer look at what Color Guard is all about.

We'll be sharing the reality behind some of the common misconceptions about our sport and highlight the hard work, dedication, creativity, and athleticism that makes our team so special.

Our team began competing in 2023, and during the 2025-2026 season, we proudly earned IDTA State Championship titles in both Lyrical Flag and Precision Flag.

But our story isn't just about championships. It's about finding confidence, making lifelong friendships, learning new skills, and becoming part of something bigger than ourselves.

Whether you're a student looking for something new to be a part of, a parent wanting to learn more, or a community member who has sponsored us or cheered us on from the stands, we invite you to follow along.
