There is something about The Nutcracker that gets people every single time and it does not matter how many times you have seen it.

The music is one of the most recognizable and beloved in all of classical music. The story is timeless. And watching dancers who have worked all year bring it to life on a real stage is an experience that stays with a family long after the final bow.

Two performances on Sunday, November 22nd. 1pm and 6pm at Capital One Hall in Tysons.

This is a wonderful way to spend a November Sunday and an equally wonderful first introduction to live dance for any child in your life.

You will record it. You should. But you will know the moment it starts that the recording is not going to get it.

It will not capture the way time moves differently when they are on that stage. How the whole room seems to hold its breath for a child who has worked really hard and is giving everything they have.

It will not get the specific warmth that starts in your chest around the first eight counts and keeps building until you are not sure you can hold it.

And it will not show the look they give you when they take their bow. The one that is looking for your face specifically in a room full of hundreds of people.

That look is yours. No camera reaches it 💖

That is one of our favorite things about this place. The friendships that grow at the barre, side by side, season after season.

You might already have a feeling. Here is how to know for sure:

1. They cannot hear music without moving. It does not matter where they are or who is watching. Their body just responds automatically every single time.

2. They are incredibly expressive. Big feelings, big reactions, big energy. Dance is literally the perfect place to channel all of that into something beautiful.

3. They love performing. Even if it is just for the dog in the living room. They want an audience and they want to give that audience something worth watching.

4. They are drawn to watching dance. Recitals, videos, performances on any screen. Something in them recognizes something in the movement and leans toward it instinctively.

5. They asked you about dance class. Maybe once, maybe a hundred times. Either way, they brought it up, and that means something worth paying attention to.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes! 🩷

This week, the DAV teachers and staff have come together for leadership meetings, training and curriculum meetings, aligning on lesson planning and preparing for the best year yet!

Because a great dance education starts long before the first dancer walks into the studio. It starts with teachers who are prepared, supported and aligned on the experience we want to create for every student.

The big recital moments are beautiful. But honestly? That is not the part that stays with you.

It is the little stuff.

The correction from last week that suddenly just clicks. The way you can see them thinking, adjusting, reaching for something a little past where they were before. 🩰

That is what dance quietly does. It teaches them to be patient with themselves. To chase something hard and actually love the process. To carry themselves with a calm, quiet confidence that shows up way outside the studio too.

And when the stage lights come on? All that little everyday work finally shows, and oh, it gets you. ✨

That is the good stuff. One little plié at a time. 💕
