Why do we still need women-only spaces in scuba diving?
When I created Scuba MAR Maids, I wanted women to have more choices about who they learn from, who they travel with and the kind of environment they want to be part of.
After more than 15 years working in diving, my own experiences with harassment, disrespect and having my concerns dismissed have reinforced how important this community is.
And with the conversations happening lately about harassment in diving, I want to be clear about where we stand.
Women's empowerment in diving has been part of Mar Hosted Trips since day one. It's part of our values and even the reason our logo is pink!
Safety and respect in all forms have always been non-negotiable on our trips. We expect this from everyone: our guests, trip leaders and local partners. And we hold ourselves to those same standards.
We have written safety guidelines, clear expectations for our trip leaders and procedures for responding to concerns. We pay attention to how our guests are treated, and when someone speaks up, we listen and take their concerns seriously.
We cannot control every person or every situation, but we can be thoughtful about who we work with, how we prepare our trips and how we respond when something goes wrong.
I want women to feel comfortable booking a trip alone, asking questions, speaking up about their needs and enjoying the adventure without feeling they have to prove themselves to anyone.
Through our Scuba MAR Maids travel community and scuba mar Scuba MAR Maids Dive School, we will continue creating opportunities for women to travel the world, become better divers, get certified, build friendships and support each other.
And we will keep choosing local partners who share our values and respect the people and communities welcoming us.
For the women who have traveled with us: help us reach out women who may need safe options to dive an travel the world.
