One of the biggest mistakes I see pitchers make when throwing the curve is at release turning their fingers forward too soon.

When that happens, they start pushing the ball instead of allowing the arm to whip and the ball to spin naturally off their fingertips. The result is often a ball that comes out with less spin, less speed, and less movement.

Here’s what I want pitchers to understand:
The spin doesn’t start out in front of you. It begins behind you.
Lead with the elbow, allow the arm to whip, and let the pinky side of the hand initiate the rotation. That rotation travels across the fingers as the ball rolls toward release, finishing off the index finger and thumb.

Don’t turn your hand early to force the spin. Create the whip and let the fingers finish the job.

Not every pitcher creates spin the same way. And we shouldn’t coach them like they do. 🥎

One of the things I pay close attention to when teaching spin is WHERE a pitcher naturally creates the most break on the ball.

Is it on the inside of the ball? Through the middle? Or on the outside?

Which position does she naturally favor? Where is she most efficient? And what kind of movement can we consistently expect from each position?

Because each location can produce a different result, and understanding those differences is a huge part of pitch development.

But it doesn’t stop at hand position.

I’m also watching the fingertips.

How is she applying pressure? Which fingers are doing the work? Is she utilizing her fingers throughout the entire spin, or is she losing that connection along the way?

Those little details matter.

My goal isn’t to make every pitcher spin the ball exactly the same way. It’s to help each athlete understand what she naturally does well, develop better feel and control, and learn how to use those strengths to create more effective movement.

Don’t just teach a pitcher HOW to spin the ball. Teach her to understand WHY the ball moves the way it does.

That’s when she starts learning how to make the ball move with intention.
