Very well said.

So many pitchers don’t want to put in the WORK.

And I mean the HARD work that it takes to become a pitcher.

They move past (or ignore) the small things quickly to get to big things as fast as they can, when really, it’s the worst thing they can do.

You see, it’s more fun to work on the “big things” - learning a new pitch, pitching from full distance, gaining MPH.

The little things don’t have as much allure....they’re not as fun to tell people....and it’s often times hard to see a difference as quickly as you’d really like to, especially in a world of instant gratification.

Just like some people want to run a marathon, but they don’t want to put in the time and effort to train for it.

Some people want to take the big vacation, but they don’t want to work the extra hours or save the extra cash to pay for it.

The real journey is in the details and in the hustle of the every day work it takes to GET TO the big things.

The small, little, focused things is where the real work is actually done. It’s what most pitchers AREN’T paying attention to, and it’s really the most important.

It’s truly the difference between average and good. And good and great.

It takes so much more focused energy, patience and passion to pay attention to the little things. They’re tedious. They’re rarely easy. But they’re foundational in success and growth.

They’re also instrumental in your longevity.

When you skip the small things and lose sight of their importance, your limitations hit you a lot sooner. Your growth tends to minimize/stop at an earlier age.

When you dig into the small things, your growth might not seem as quick in the early stages, but they will will propel you like a rocket in later ages.

If you had to choose, would you rather be the best 10u pitcher or the best college pitcher?🤔

What are YOU giving your energy and attention to?
Is it ONLY given to the big things?

Ask yourself when you’re practicing - have you mastered the small thing you’re working on? Or are you bored of the small thing you’re working on?

What is your motivation for moving on?

If it’s because you’re bored, you’re moving on for the wrong reasons.

💡

PS / this is the recipe to be successful at VARIOUS things in life - not just pitching. A job, a career, a relationship, any other sport/passion.

Due to the storm/tornado damage I will not be scheduling lessons this week and will assess my situation for next week. Our store and my facility are intact but another of our properties was hit pretty hard and will need extensive reconstruction and we will continue the cleanup of the trees that are down. Thank you to everyone who reached out to check on us, everyone is safe and that's all that matters. Keep posted for updates about scheduling next week.

When great opportunities come their way, we celebrate with our students. And, we are excited because two of them are excited today.

Congratulations to Emily Winstead, who is going to take the mound for Alabama. The Crimson Tide snatched Emily from the transfer portal. She is a student of Thomas Judkins in eastern North Carolina and her college career thus far has been stellar. Thomas said he knew she would be special from the beginning. “She came in just shy of her 11th birthday, eager to learn and get better. The way she communicated the things she felt was first sign that she would be great. Each time Emily came to see me it was clear she had worked hard on the things we covered in the previous lesson. She was not afraid to take chances and learned to make adjustments to command the zone. These traits allowed her to reach her goals and dreams.” We are proud of the work Emily and Thomas have done. Alabama made a great choice.

Now, let’s talk about Bella Smith. We met at a college camp and I was not particularly impressed with her skills. However, she had that “it factor”, a mindset that made me wish I could help her grow on a regular basis. The distance between us was great, but somehow we made it work and we constantly pushed one another. I knew special things were ahead. She made a splash in college, and recently I got the news. Bella is headed to Oklahoma. I think the Sooners are gettng a great one from the transfer portal. I am proud. Bella just kept raising the bar.

Kids like Emily and Bella are part of the reason we get are excited to go to work every day!

If you are taking private (or group) lessons, understand that hard work must be put in, and is expected to be put in, OUTSIDE of the weekly lesson.

You go to a lesson to learn what you need to work on. SOMETIMES you will fix things inside of a lesson, but more times than not, the things that need work will be fixed OUTSIDE of the lesson in your own practice time.

Make sure once you leave the lesson, you are aware of what those 2-3 key things are that you need to work on. That week at practice, focus on those things, and make the corrections so that when you show up at lesson the following week, you get to work on NEW things. It takes effort on your part and it helps you learn on your own how to fix things and how to work through problems rather than someone hovering over you and telling you exactly what to do.

It does no good to attend weekly lessons and be working on the exact same problem week in and week out. Go to lessons because you want to learn and get better. Don't go to lessons because you want a scheduled weekly practice time and someone to show you how to throw new pitches.

Learning and throwing new pitches should be EARNED with good mechanics and accuracy, not just expected because you show up every week.
