RIP Coach Brantl

Lights shine across the region in tribute to Coach Gary Brantl

On April 26, Mayville State University joined schools across northwest Minnesota in honoring the late Gary Brantl, Mayville State alumnus who was a beloved coach, educator, and mentor whose impact reached generations. Brantl passed away from pancreatic cancer in April. In a tradition tied to remembering fallen coaches, more than two dozen schools came together in a shared show of respect by lighting up their football fields. Mayville State’s Jerome Berg Field was among them. Schools from Ada-Borup to Lake of the Woods, Thief River Falls, Warroad, and Mahnomen, participated, a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy continues to shine.

Brantl was a small-town teacher who everyone admired. A three-sport high school athlete, he devoted his life to Plummer, Minnesota, where he coached football for 34 years, founded the wrestling program, and served as longtime athletic director. He also took great pride in maintaining Brantl Field, caring for the football field that now bears his name.
