One thing we look for in every retriever is the perfect balance between drive and control.

The desire to attack the water and get to the bird is what makes a great retriever, but just as important is the ability to remain steady on the line until their name is called.

A dog that can sit calmly, focus on the mark, and then explode into the water with confidence is a dog that’s developing the foundation needed for success in both hunt tests and the duck blind.

Drive when it’s time to go. Discipline when it’s time to wait.

Eye contact creates connection. Connection creates trust. Trust creates teamwork.

There’s nothing quite like watching a young dog put the pieces together. The excitement, focus, and desire to retrieve are what make these early stages so rewarding.

Every mark, every sit, and every successful retrieve is another step toward building a confident, reliable retriever. The key is consistency—showing up every day, keeping training fun, and letting the dog develop through repetition and success.

This young Boykin is learning that good things happen when patience meets opportunity. The future is bright for this one.

The progression of Havoc, the Boykin puppy, is growing by the week!

His prey drive is through the roof, and that’s exactly what we love to see in a young retriever. Building prey drive is one of the most important aspects of developing a future hunting and competition dog. Desire, enthusiasm, and the willingness to chase and retrieve are the foundation that everything else is built on.

At this age, our focus is keeping training fun, building confidence, and encouraging that natural instinct every chance we get.

Drive first. Discipline later. Results always.
