Just now:

Good morning,

Fire activity for the Long Bend Fire is picking up and we are bringing in additional aircraft -both helicopters and air tankers.

Unfortunately, the helicopter pilots are reporting that it is challenging for them to avoid boats while dipping, making it a safety issue for them.

As a result, launches that have not yet happened at Long Bend, Harpham/any access upstream of the Depot House will not happen today. Trips can be cancelled and refunded, or you can launch from Maupin City Park. There may be additional boater passes for Segment 3b - if you want to run your float to Macks Canyon, we can process a refund for Segment 2.

Trips that are already on the river can continue. People needing to access vehicles will be allowed to pass through.

Trips coming off at Harpham from Segment 1 will be able to come off. River rangers will be holding up these boats and letting them float through at designated times. Floats launching from Warm Springs, Mecca or Trout Creek can continue.

We are ordering a heavy airtanker to support suppression efforts, and with that and heavy helicopters, the Prineville Hotshots, we hope to get this fire stopped as soon as we can.

If you need to request a refund, please reach out the Beth Hartwood tomorrow.

Again, sorry for the late notice - as we know fire conditions on the river can change rapidly. I will continue to send messages about conditions as I get the information.

Below is the update from BLM: (Be Safe)

Good Morning; status update: fire activity on the Long Bend fire quieted overnight, and the fire has stayed on the west side of the river. The fire is about 600 acres and is moving to the west down Wapinitia canyon and somewhat to the south. Wildland firefighters and Juniper Flat RFPD are on scene, with more resources arriving today. The river is not closed, and floats are launching. Please be aware of helicopters doing bucket work and follow the directions of firefighters and BLM staff. Your parties may be asked to pause temporarily and raft through after the helicopter has dipped. Pictures of the Helos are great - but from a distance. An accidental release of the water in the bucket could cause severe injuries or be fatal as the water can weigh several thousand pounds, depending on the bucket size! If conditions change we will work with you for alternate launches or takeouts. Let us know if you have any questions and have fun, safe floats!
