I had the honor of sitting on the board of judges for this amazing woman’s black belt test in April of 2024. If you’re looking for a good cause to donate to this holiday season, it’s this one. Read about Sempai Tara’s story and how you can help.

Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Shihan and Deshi of USRKUSA:

On Thursday, October 16th, the Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Long Island Karate Dojo conducted a tip test. The group led by Sensei Kim Garon began with a formal bow-in and dedication of the test to Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro. We continued with traditional warm-ups, push-ups, basic kihon across the deck, leg work and numerous repetitions of kata. The board of judges consisted of Sensei Kim Garon and Sensei Michael Gallagher.

The following candidate tested for and was promoted to the rank of

Ro-Kyu (one green tip):

William Simon

Before awarding the testing candidate his certificate and tip, Sensei Gallagher discussed the importance of proper breathing and pacing ourselves; in essence, breath is life.

Sensei Garon commended William for his consistency in training since he started at the dojo in July and stressed that not taking breaks in training is key to self-improvement. William has come a very long way in 3 months with his stamina and technique.

Thank you to Vincent Carvelli for showing up to support your fellow deshi and for keeping William moving on the deck while the board of judges deliberated.

Domo arigato to Hanshi Robert Scaglione for his leadership, dedication, and encouragement.

Domo arigato gozaimasu,

Sensei Kim Garon, Yon-Dan and Shihan
