I recently completed a call that was used as a Christmas present. It was crafted from an old white oak barn beam salvaged from a grainery that once stood on my farm, dating back to the late 1890s. During the process, I was struck by the remarkably tight growth rings in the wood, prompting a comparison with a piece of white oak lumber milled last year. The results revealed approximately three times as many rings in the antiquated lumber compared to the newer material.
