Ohio 9 Base Ball Club

Ohio 9 Base Ball Club The Ohio 9 formed in 2021 from the merging of the Blackbottom 9 and the New Richmond Generals.

Combining the Generals' connections to Ulysses S, Grant, the 9's blackbottom home, we adopted Cincinnati's 9th regiment as the foundation of our squad.

After getting rained out last weekend, The Ohio 9 opened their season today a bit dryer at Corwin-Nixon fields in beautiful Mason, Ohio, starting off the first full season at their new home field. They were joined by the Bluegrass Barons of Lexington, Kentucky, for two 7 inning matches. We want to extend a heartfelt welcome to our two newest members, Sam "Timber" Spight, and Scott "Goose" Gossett. Scott received his nickname right before the game, not because it was similar to his last name (well maybe a little), but from the sighting of a goose walking through our outfield.

The skies were cloudy for the first pitch of Game 1, which didn't see much run production from either team. The only runs for The 9 were from William "Elmer" Segrist's 2 RBIs on a 2-out double. "Timber" went 2 for 3 in his debut, and Elmer had a fantastic rolling bound catch on a ball in foul territory. Otherwise The 9 struggled on defense for most of the game, and the Barons went on to best us in the first match by a score of 5 to 2.

We all settled in as the sun finally came out for the second match, which perked up everyone's spirits and bats. Joshua "Axeman" Engel went 4 for 4, Jim "Tugboat" Breen and Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster both went 3 for 3. "Goose" drove in his first two RBIs in his vintage debut. Even with this solid effort, your 9 again struggled on defense, and again came up a bit short as the Barons won 14-6.

Many thanks to the Barons for driving north to meet up for a fine day of base ball. We look forward to seeing them again in a couple of months as we travel south to Shaker Village outside of Harrodsburg, Kentucky on 20 June.

Also thanks to Jonathan "Rainman" Goebel who stepped in as arbiter as he continues the healing process.

Your Ohio 9 are in action again next weekend on Saturday, May 2nd, as we travel north to play the Champion City Reapers at 2777 Springfield Yellow Springs Road in Yellow Springs, Ohio. See you there!

To prove that there was vintage base ball this weekend in venues other than the Ohio Cup in Westerville, the Dayton Clodbuster Base Ball Club headed south to face your Ohio 9 at a special location, the Miami Bluffs community in Maineville, otherwise known as "Tugboat Field". The Clods came to town looking to avenge a one-run loss from a few weeks ago at their home field at Carillon Park.

Our friends from up north set a pace for the game in the top of the first inning, with several base hits and 3 runs tallied. Looking to answer, Dylan "Scooter" Schuster led off the bottom of the first with a single and was able to make it the second base, but was stranded there after some fine defense by the Clodbusters. The Clods picked up where they left off in the top of the second, scoring 5 more times on some fine hitting and several defensive miscues by the 9.

The 9 struggled at the plate with the bound rule all day long, 7 of our 27 recorded outs were by balls caught on one bounce. Two of our ballists were striking well today, Scooter went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two singles. Jared "Tacklebox" Gilliam went 4 for 4 with two singles and two doubles.

Ultimately it wasn't enough as the Clodbuster's stellar defense was too much to overcome, The 9 fell by a score of 18-5, dropping our record to 7-2 on the year. Thanks to "Blue" of the Red Stockings for subbing for us today, and many thanks to the Clodbusters for heading south for today's match.

We're back in action on Saturday, September 20th for the last ever "Heart of Vintage Base Ball Tournament". As currently scheduled, the Cincinnati Buckeyes, 1869 Red Stockings, Clodbusters, Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers, and The Ohio 9 will be playing in a double elimination tournament. Due to a scheduling conflict at our new home field at Corwin-Nixon fields in Mason, we'll be playing the final HOVBBT at our previous home field in Joyce Park in Hamilton Ohio. Turn right on the access drive across from Wake Nation. Hope to see you there for a fine day of vintage base ball!

Well, it was a wild and wooly day at the ball field, your Ohio 9 traveled north to play the German Village Hobnobbers at Schiller Park in Columbus, in a game that saw 73 total runs scored.

We were blessed with some wonderful weather, temps in the 80s with plenty of sunshine. Schiller Park is simply beautiful, a great venue for baseball with floral lined walking paths, plenty of trees, and good public visibility. The game drew many observers passing by the field.

Did we say plenty of trees? There were, both surrounding the ball field and also in the field of play. Not quite as many as the 72 trees in the field of play in the Carillon Historic Village, but these were large trees that definitely affected play, turning the day into a big game of Plinko. The tree located behind the hurler with its low hanging branches made throws from shortstop and third base to first base a real adventure. We even had an angry "Wizard of Oz" tree that caught a foul ball and refused to give it up.

There was some good defense even with all the runs scored, Dylan "Scooter" Schuster earned a temporary nickname of "Scooter de la Cruz" with an outstanding catch at third base.

There was plenty of action all day both at the plate and on the base paths, making it difficult to single out any one player for their accomplishments, but we have to mention that Raymond "Straps" Peining reached base safely and scored in all eight of his plate appearances.

Many thanks to The German Village Hobnobbers for inviting us to Columbus for the afternoon for a wonderful day of base ball. Thanks also to Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster for filling in to field a team of nine.

The Ohio 9 pushed their record to 7-1 on the year. We're back in action next weekend vs the Dayton Clodbusters on Sunday at noon at the Miami Bluffs community in Maineville. See you there!

This weekend your Ohio 9 traveled to Nashville to face the "ragtag" team (their words) combining players from several different teams from the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball.

We met on the grounds of The Hermitage, which was the Tennessee home of our seventh president, Andrew Jackson. A very picturesque setting with the mansion in view behind home plate, as well as horses grazing in a field beyond the left field fence. Our ball field was lined with rows of beautiful mature magnolias, oaks, and poplars.

We knew ahead of time that the day was going to be a scorcher, and the sun shone bright and hot with little cloud cover. Luckily a consistent breeze was with us most of the day, which made the 90 degree temps somewhat tolerable.

We decided to play two 7 inning matches, the first by Tennessee rules, which featured bound ball, open fielding, and no stealing or sliding (much to the chagrin of Christian "Boston" Ollson). The second game was per The 9's rules, which also was a bound affair, but with closed fielding, stealing, and sliding.

The 9 was able to take an early lead in both games and backed the strong offense up with some solid defense, as well as some opportunistic base running, even with an uphill third base to home route. This day saw the pitching debut of Ralph "Hobo" Klosterman, and the second game this year with Isaiah "Raindrop" Goebel, who was solid defensively at first base all day. We were happy to have Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster in the lineup, he had a very strong day at the plate.

The 9 pushed their record to 6-1 on the year. After taking a few weeks off to avoid the summer heat, we'll be back in action on 24 August at Schiller Park in Columbus to face the German Village 9 team.

Many thanks to our Tennessee hosts for inviting us down this weekend for a great day of vintage base ball.

The Ohio 9 traveled north to visit the Dayton Clodbusters at the beautiful Carillon Park today. With the threat of inclement weather, the decision was made to play a single 9 inning game instead of 2 sevens. The bound match was a tight back and forth affair for the first several innings with limited run production thanks to some excellent defense on both sides, until the Clodbusters erupted for a 5-spot in the fifth inning, stretching their lead. The 9 was able to claw back into the game with some fine striking of their own over the next couple of innings, only to see the Clods tie it up in the top of the 8th. With darkening skies approaching, the 9 was able to plate another run in the bottom half of the inning before the raindrops started to fall. The decision was made to call the game after 8 innings, we barely got our handshakes in before we were met with a real gulley washer.

Today was the first game for Chuck "Wagon" (your last name here). The 9 also welcomed back Isaiah "Raindrop" Goebel for the game today.

Many thanks to our wonderful hosts the Clodbusters, who served up a wonderful taco meal (indoors) after the game, replete with a couple of home-baked pies for dessert. Yum!

Sitting at 4-1 on the year, the 9 hits the road next weekend, heading south to Nashville next Saturday to face the Nashville Maroons at The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's Tennessee home.
