According to a study by Sara Kwon and colleagues published in the journal Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine (2019), therapeutic horseback riding (THR) may help improve language and cognitive abilities in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disability (ID). In this study, children aged 6–13 participated in an 8-week program where the therapy group received conventional therapy along with 30 minutes of therapeutic horseback riding once per week. Researchers measured changes in language using standardized tests such as the Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT) and the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale (PRES), and assessed cognition using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development.

The findings showed that children who participated in therapeutic horseback riding experienced significant improvements in receptive language, expressive language, vocabulary skills, and cognitive functioning after the 8-week intervention. Although both the therapy and control groups showed some improvement, the horseback riding group improved in more areas. Researchers concluded that therapeutic horseback riding may be a promising complementary therapy to support communication, learning, and cognitive development in children with ASD and intellectual disabilities.

For all of our families please give us some grace this week if one of the volunteers or the instructor walks away from the group it because we just need a small moment! Jill was 36 and loved with her whole heart she leaves us with a hole in our that only time can heal. To our unicorn Jill:

Upon the hill where soft winds roam,
We sit in silence, all alone.
The grass still bends where you once lay,
Your spirit lingers, night and day.

Your gallop sang, your breath was fire,
A living dream, my one desire.
Now only whispers touch the skies,
A glowing shadow in my eyes.

“We miss you girl,” falls from lips so low,
And through the night, you whisper, “I know.”
Though earth has claimed your fleeting stride,
Your soul still stands here by my side.

No reins, no saddle, just the light,
A faithful bond beyond the night.
My dearest friend, though you are gone,
Within my heart, you still live forever and always!

We are excited to host our 1st Annual Gentle Harvest Day on the sensory farm this fall! We typically do our fall event at the learning tree farm but now that we have the property, we are aiming to do it here. We are super excited to watch it grow and improve year after year as well. Autism Connections is hosting a Pints for a Purpose this Thursday from 5-8pm at March First Brewing in Cincinnati. $1 from each drink purchased will go towards Autism Connections. They are another great organization out there making a difference and providing resources. We don’t believe in gatekeeping and wanted to share a few of their LIFE Skills programs in hopes of it benefiting someone else!

A few things about their services:

L.I.F.E. Skills-Relationship program: a 13-week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated adults with autism, ages 18 and over. This course takes a deep dive into all of the unwritten rules surrounding finding friends, building and maintaining relationships, and resolving interpersonal disagreements and conflict. L.I.F.E. is an acronym for Learning Independence for Everyday, and it focuses on teaching some unwritten or untaught concepts that are often assumed that everyone learns – but, in fact, these “rules” are not always logic or obvious to people with alternative ways of viewing the world

L.I.F.E Skills-Exploring Employment program: In this course, adults will explore their personal interests and skills, learn about the different types of careers, and build a path towards interesting, fulfilling, and meaningful employment. Topics include: Translating Interests into Job Skills, Different Avenues to Employment, Creating an Impactful Application, Soft Skills for Workplace Success, Interview Skills and Self-Advocacy, & Addressing Challenges in Employment
