Dolly Parton Tribute Part 2

I had a neighbor across the street who did not like the fact that I had large numbers of people coming to my yoga class and always parking in front of his house. He would never say hi to me, he would just look down when he was watering the lawn.
One day, Dolly pulled up in her station wagon with a Nashville license plate while he was watering the lawn. I saw him do a double take when she got out of the car.
That afternoon, he came over, knocked on my door, and said, “Was that Dolly Parton?”
I said, “Yes.”
He said, “Is there any way I can meet her?”
I told him I would ask her, so I shared the whole story with Dolly. She said, “No problem, darling.” She walked right over, knocked on his door, and shook his hand.
From that day on, I could park in his driveway, and he welcomed every single one of my students who parked in front of his house.

Breathe…

Dolly Parton always seemed like one of those people we had collectively agreed was simply not allowed to die.

Like Betty White.
Like Willie Nelson.
Like Aretha Franklin.
Like somebody should have put it in the Constitution.

Dolly stays.

Dolly was so much more. Not just a voice or hair or y’all know…. Or even the songs that were dope the first time I heard them and seem to never have an expiration date on when and how they can mean something to you.

She was kindness.

She could make you laugh AND remind you to be a better human. She came from very little, built an empire, and then spent an extraordinary amount of her life making sure other people—especially children—had access to possibilities she never took for granted.

What I personally loved the most about her was when the world gave her opportunities to choose what was popular over what was right, Dolly had this remarkable way of standing her ground without ever losing her grace.

She made room for people. She loved people.

God, I want to be more like Dolly.

She proved that kindness doesn’t have to be apolitical. She made it her mission to let us know that everybody belongs here.

Dolly Parton died today at 80 years old.

Just typing that doesn’t feel right. It feels maddening.

Look, I know 80 years is a gift.

But somehow it still doesn’t seem like nearly enough.

Somewhere in my mind she made me believe she was permanent. I know that sounds asinine.

But here’s the thing…
The songs will be.
The stories will be.
The millions of children who received a book because she believed they deserved one will be.

And that unmistakable reminder that you can be funny, fabulous, faithful, generous, successful as hell, covered head-to-toe in rhinestones—and still give a damn about your neighbor.

Rest well, Dolly.

You made this place bearable.

And dammit, it just seems wrong that we ever had to lose you. ❤️

Be more like Dolly friends, be more like Dolly.
