St. Louis Martial Arts Academy

St. Louis Martial Arts Academy STLMAA is home to those interested in learning self-defense methods through the practice of traditional martial arts.

STLMAAA was established and is operated by members of the Applied Combatives Group. We believe that no single martial art meets the complete needs of every individual or has the answer for every situation. Therefore, consistent with the philosophy of the late Bruce Lee, we encourage all students to continually explore, learn, and train in multiple systems. Our goal was to create a training environ

ment that is welcoming for martial artists of all styles and all levels of experience and proficiency. STLMAA provides a dedicated, yet fun and open-minded training environment conducive to developing each students innate abilities and attributes. At STLMAA, you will be exposed to a variety of systems, philosophies, attitudes, and methods in hopes that it will ultimately lead to your own individualized expression of the arts. You may choose a single art or, through cross training, develop an individualized method of self-defense. We are not here to teach THE way, but to help you find YOUR way—the method that fits your physical, mental, and practical needs. This personalized training allows each student access to the best that the martial arts have to offer. We appreciate the opportunity to share with you.

Ten years ago, 5 instructors took the leap to open a martial arts academy with the shared vision of creating a collaborative and welcoming environment in which people could get the best training. We persevered through business ups and downs, a global pandemic, and social and economic unrest to reach a milestone that we couldn't even see from where we stood at the start.

Ten years ago today, we opened our doors and taught our first classes with just a few students. Our 5-year anniversary was marred by the COVID pandemic, so we wanted to take this time to express our appreciation to our students, instructors, partners, and community who have stuck with us and helped us see this through.

We look forward to decades more.

In response to the most recent federal and local guidance, STLMAA will be closed until at least Monday, March 30, at which time we will assess the circumstances. We do not take this decision lightly--we believe that it's the best decision for the health and safety of our membership and the community at large.

We are committed to following the guidance of public health authorities and experts who recommend aggressively limiting person-to-person contact. Martial arts is an up-close-and-personal, hands-on activity--we don't think that continuing to train under these circumstances would be prudent.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and we'll see you on the other side of this.

In the last few days, we have seen some extraordinary and unprecedented activity in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The STLMAA leadership is committed to taking appropriate actions to maximize the safety of our members and the community at large by following the recommendations of federal, state, and local public health authorities.

At this time, there are no recommendations to restrict small gatherings or businesses (< 250 people), so STLMAA will remain open for regular training until further notice. However, we are stepping up our preventive measures and ask everyone to adhere to the common sense recommendations:

1. Stay home if you are sick
2. Avoid sick people and large crowds
3. Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly
4. Know if you are higher risk for COVID-19 and take appropriate steps
5. Follow the recommendations of the CDC and local public health departments

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China.
