Got back out on the court today with Patricia Romero . We started back at the beginning of De Fondo again. It's been 5 years since Covid shut down the in person classes at Hidden Lakes. I can't believe it! We did on line training for quite a while, which was great. Also thanks to Tommy Anthony for including me in his classes on occasion. But, it sure felt good to get back out in the sun and swing sticks. If you want to join us, you are welcome. Don't expect anything but basics and hard work. If you want to grind out your De Fondo and refine your fundamentals, let me know.

Mmmm Tinola. If you know, you know.

Had a great time teaching in person again yesterday. Thanks Tom Corpuz for letting me mess with your group. Went into some details about the coconut drill, Retirada, and Escapo. Been a while since I did that. Felt really good. Lots of people just touch the surface of these drills. It's good to go deeper sometimes and pull out some finer points. There is a lifetime of study in the basics. Thanks again!

Haven't posted in a very long time. Happy New Year to all. Maria and I wish the very best to everyone in 2024. Hoping to make some headway this year on the book. Would love to hear from anyone here to see if anyone is listening or has any interest at all. Could use a boost. Thanks all and have a wonderful 2024.

Sister Suzanne Motta beat me to it. Happy 90th Dad. For those of you who think he's old, he just got a smart phone and learned to text and manage his security cameras. My Dad is the smartest, best man I have ever know and I am so proud to be his son. Happy Birthday Dad!!

It occurs to me that learning an art is a lot like learning to cook. I suppose it is like learning any craft/art. We can have a debate on the line between art and craft on another day. But learning a particular style of Martial Arts is like learning a style of cooking. There are fundamental principles like knife work; dice versus chop versus mince. Or, making your sofritto. Or, toasting your spices. Once you master the fundamentals, you are free to explore new ingredients and methods. I never thought learning an art was just a rote memorization of dogma. It was always an exploration of why. It's an insatiable thirst to understand, not just to know. So many teachers just told me to do it again, do it again. But the ones who taught me to cook only encouraged me to understand. And, it was always a loose set of rules based on principles, not recipes. So, if you are training in an art that insists on recipes or rote mimicry, look someplace else for a teacher who will explain the why, not just the what.

Yet another Stockton warrior has passed. All of us at MFA mark the passing of Grand Master Rene Latosa and mourn with his family and students. Rest in peace, GM Latosa. Heaven has gained another warrior.

I have to say something. I can't stay silent. When are we going to take responsibility for the madness of murder in this country? I'm not going to say that a trained defender could have stopped this latest monster in Texas. That's bu****it, plain and simple. All of us who train in the arts know it's bu****it. In the time it would take for a trained person to step in and take down the assailant, he would still kill far too many innocent children. Look at the latest SOCAL shooting. A trained person, a doctor who has extensive training in Kung Fu, sacrificed himself and helped stop the gunman but not before too many innocent people were killed; including himself. Reaction always lags behind action. We need action, not Reaction. Those of us in this field, we who are responsible gun owners, we who train in lethal arts, need to step up and put our energy behind sensible gun legislation. I don't own an AR15. I don't need one. Nobody does. Period. Nobody needs to have massive firepower. It's senseless and absurd. The fantasy you are living that tells you you need to have enough ammo and caliber to take down a zombie horde is just that, a fantasy. You have bought into it because you feel powerless and impotent, insecure and inadequate. GROW THE F**K UP!! If you think a good guy with a gun is the only answer to a bad guy with a gun, then you are living a delusion. If more guns were the cure, America would be the safest country in the world. Instead, we are the deadliest. When will my fellow gun owners step up and demand stricter gun laws and the abolition of the market for military grade weapons and high capacity magazines?? If this post offends you, go the f**k away. I agree with Steve Kerr. I am f**king sick and tired of seeing our legislators sacrifice the lives of innocent children and people to maintain their power. And I am sick and tired of the stupid 2nd ammendment "defenders" who's hands are soaked in the blood of innocent children. I am also sick and tired of the MA community peddling fantasy and convincing people they need to train because of a perceived threat. No, you need to train so you can get your own head straight, work out your own issues, dispell your fantasies, and grow into a whole and balanced contributor to society; not to learn how to disembodied a potential zombie attacker. We used to be responsible people. Now we are just cowardly simpletons. Enough!!

Hello everyone. Well, we have made it through #6 in the DeFondo curriculum during our weekly Zoom class. It's great to do some work and check in with students across the country. That sounds more dramatic than it is. I have one awesome student in Chicago and one very special veteran student in Virginia as well as my loyal best buddy here in California. So, technically, I have students all across the country...see how that works? All kidding aside, it is such a blessing to have a few, very loyal and supportive students. I would much rather have these three than a thousand students who are only half into it.

The best part about these classes is that Chris Brown records them and sends me the transcripts. Lord, I talk a lot! But there are some good tidbits in there that I can w**d out and use in the future.

We tend to revisit the connection of objective and action quite a bit and in this format, we can really focus on what we are trying to achieve and the steps we take to get there. Yesterday, I reminded the class that we must not lose sight of the objective by focusing too much on the actions we take to achieve it. That is, we need to find the correct and appropriate actions and techniques that most effectively get us to the objective and remember that the objective is not the block or evasion, it's the follow up. Defensive techniques are like can openers, they create opportunities for your follow ups. That's why Uncle Leo insisted we follow up at least 6 times. He knew that the follow up was what eliminated the threat and he also knew that repeating them over and over would make them second nature. Consider that the next time you are working on any technique. Are you using the technique to gain initiative so you can drive that Saboy up through the vital areas or crash that Bartical strike down through the neck? Or, are your happy with just surviving the strike with your block and throwing away your follow up because it seems tedious and boring? You can toggle your focus during training back and forth between the objective and the techniques so you hone your skill. That is what training is for. Just remember that the follow up is the prize and the techniques are kind of the b***y prize. Don't stop practicing once you "know" the components of the technique. You have to hone them until they serve as the effective tool you use to gain your objective.

Be well everyone!

Good remote class today. Covered 4 heavy and touched on #5 evade drill. Lots of good concepts like proximity, actions and objectives, and the 4 fundamental responses to attack. Thank you so much Chris for setting up these Zoom sessions! Thanks Patt and Janelle for taking time out to be here. It means the world to me.

Happy 2022 all. A little late but welcome to the new year. Looking forward to continuing our Zoom classes on Sundays and possibly returning to limited, in-person training this year. That is, if the Pandemic will cooperate. If you are at all interested, please drop a line. Or, just add a comment letting us know you are still alive.

More to come soon.
