FRIDAY FEATURE
This week, allow me to introduce you to Ghost Rider! If you’re a fan of Top Gun, you’ll appreciate that the name is a nod to Maverick and Goose’s radio callsign at the beginning of the movie. Rider’s derby number, 104, is also a nod to the radio code meaning “affirmative” or “message received.”
Rider started derby with MRD back in 2015, and after taking a break for a while, she came back in November of 2024. Since joining derby, something important Rider learned about herself is that she can do hard things! She also shared that when she started in 2015, she didn’t know how to skate at all, and MRD helped her learn the ins and outs of skating around without falling down—too much. So if you’re interested to join but scared to start, just remember: we all started somewhere too!
Rider loves to play blocker, especially as a butt (the folks at the back of a blocking triangle), because she feels tremendous satisfaction when she catches that jammer and holds them. She also serves as our league’s Head Non-Skating Official, so if you’re interested in helping the league in a non-skating capacity, feel free to hit her up! When she’s not on the track, you’ll find Rider reading fantasy books, munching on some Taco Bell, hanging with her kiddo and her three cats, or watching Lord of the Rings (she’s a big fan, and wants to travel to New Zealand one day to see where the magic was made!). If she could have any super power, she’d pick teleportation so she could visit her family in the Metro Detroit area without the hassle and the traffic—and maybe to make that trip to NZ happen, too!
Give Rider a warm hello in the comments!
Over and out!
