⚖️ Award Spotlight: Referee of the Year ⚖️

Congratulations to Caden Laurn, recipient of this year’s Marquette Junior Hockey Referee of the Year Award!

This award recognizes an official whose dedication, reliability and leadership leave a lasting impact on players, coaches and the entire MJH community.

Throughout the season, Caden demonstrated exceptional professionalism, balancing the demands of his senior year with his commitment to officiating. Known for his fairness, consistency and deep understanding of the game, he earned the respect of players, coaches and fellow officials alike.

As he prepares to graduate, Caden is already taking the next step in his officiating journey. He has been selected to attend an NAHL Officiating Exposure Camp, a prestigious opportunity aimed at developing the next generation of elite junior and professional officials.

Whether he’s officiating games in Marquette or in a new community while pursuing his college education, Caden has set an outstanding example of integrity, dedication and passion for the sport.

🏒 Award Spotlight: John Vargo Scholarship Winner 🏒

Congratulations to Parker Nevenhoven, recipient of this year’s John Vargo Scholarship!

This award recognizes a graduating senior who has spent the majority of their hockey career in Marquette Junior Hockey and whose dedication, leadership and love of the game extend far beyond the ice.

Parker has been part of the MJH family since he was five years old. Over the years, he has not only represented the program as a player but has also given back as a timekeeper, demonstrating his commitment to the game and the hockey community.

Over the past four years, Parker has grown from a quiet freshman into a respected leader whom his teammates looked to for direction and guidance. His passion for hockey, willingness to serve others and lifelong dedication to Marquette Junior Hockey make him a deserving recipient of this honor.

Thank you, Parker, for the example you have set both on and off the ice. We are proud of all you have accomplished and can't wait to see what the future holds.

Congratulations to this year’s Paul Berglund Memorial Award recipient, Aaron Ranta, our Marquette Junior Hockey Coach of the Year! 🏒🏆

Coach Aaron embodies everything youth hockey should be about — building character, teaching respect, fostering teamwork and making sure every player feels valued and excited to come to the rink.

Despite the early mornings, forgotten gear and long season, Coach Aaron showed up every day with positivity, passion and unwavering dedication. He never missed a game, celebrated the little victories and always made sure his players knew what they did well.

When asked to describe him in one word, his players chose words like patient, inspiring, supportive, kind, positive and competitive — a reflection of the impact he made both on and off the ice.

Thank you, Coach Aaron, for your commitment to our players and for helping shape not only better hockey players, but better teammates and young people. Your passion for the game and dedication to our kids truly make a difference.

Volunteer of the Year – Marquette Junior Hockey

Please join us in celebrating Jennifer Kinney, this year’s recipient of the Joe Beerman Memorial Award, which honors the Volunteer of the Year—someone who goes above and beyond in service to the Marquette Junior Hockey community.

👏 We’re proud to share Jennifer’s nomination:

It is a pleasure to nominate Jen Kinney for the Joe Beerman Memorial Award. Jen truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism, dedication, and positivity that this award represents.

Jen is a constant, uplifting presence at the arena—always greeting others with a smile and ready to lend a hand wherever it is needed. She is the quintessential hockey mom, consistently going above and beyond not only for her own children’s teams, but for the entire organization.

Whether she is organizing rides, creating door signs, assembling goodie bags, providing snacks, or coordinating team meals, Jen is always among the first to step up.

As a locker room monitor, she helps keep things running smoothly by assisting players with skates and equipment and ensuring a supportive, organized environment for the kids.

At the organizational level, Jen played a key role in the success of the MAC Tournament, helping secure donors and ensuring everything ran seamlessly. She also took the lead in coordinating Marquette Junior Hockey’s hosting of the 10U Districts, managing countless details to create a positive and well-run experience for all involved.

In addition, Jen served as the primary coordinator for the Betty Beckman Tournament, dedicating countless hours to planning and organization to ensure the event was successful from start to finish.

Looking ahead, Jen has already volunteered to take on leadership roles for both the MAC and Betty Beckman tournaments next season, a testament to her ongoing commitment and passion for the organization.

Jen also brought extra energy and excitement to game days by providing music at both Russell Arena and Olson Arena—something our players truly appreciate.

Simply put, without Jen’s hard work, determination, and ever-present positivity, this hockey season would not have been the success it was. She is an invaluable member of the Marquette Junior Hockey community and a most deserving recipient of this award.

🏆 💜 Award Spotlight: Ainsley Kargela Memorial Award & Scholarship 🏒

We are honored to recognize Calvin Symons as this year’s recipient of the Ainsley Kargela Memorial Award and Scholarship.

This award is presented to an athlete who has faced adversity with courage, strength, and resilience—someone who leads with sportsmanship, respect, and unwavering effort, just as Ainsley did.

This recognition also includes a $1,000 scholarship from Ainsley’s HALO, which can be used for hockey-related expenses such as equipment, travel, or registration.

👏 We’re proud to share Calvin’s nomination:

Calvin is a 15-year-old who served as the sole goaltender for the 18U MAHA JV Main Street Pizza team this season.

Over the past five to six years, Calvin has faced significant adversity. At just 10 years old, during the height of the pandemic, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. Later, he was also diagnosed with celiac disease. Any one of these conditions would be challenging, but managing all three requires extraordinary strength and perseverance.

Despite these obstacles, Calvin has never allowed them to slow him down. This season marked his fifth year as a sole goaltender. He has learned to monitor his health while competing, signaling when he needs glucose and continuing to play through the challenges that come with his conditions.

This year, Calvin experienced extreme fatigue as doctors discovered that his thyroid medication was no longer effectively managing his condition. Even with thyroid levels that would leave most people unable to do much of anything, Calvin continued stepping onto the ice and facing 100 or more shots in a game with his Warrior goalie stick.

Because that is exactly what Calvin is—a warrior.

We are currently seeking head coaches for:
🔹 18U AA
🔹 12U A/D
🔹 10U A/D

Interviews for these positions will take place in mid-June. Additional details regarding the positions, expectations and interview process will be provided to qualified applicants after applications are received.

🏒 🏆 Award Spotlight: Nick Krause Memorial Award 🌟

We are proud to honor Levi Westcomb, this year’s recipient of the Nick Krause Memorial Award—an award that recognizes an athlete who embodies citizenship, sportsmanship, and ethical play both on and off the ice.

This award is presented to a player who serves as a role model for youth, promotes a positive and competitive environment regardless of the scoreboard, and consistently strives to be their best while showing respect for others.

👏 We’re proud to share Levi’s nomination:

I’m proud to nominate Levi Westcomb for the Nick Krause Memorial Award. As a senior and Main Street Pizza JV/Prep Captain, Levi has been an outstanding leader for our team.

He led the team in assists and finished second in total points, but what stands out most is the way he puts his teammates first and competes with respect and integrity every time he steps on the ice.

Levi is a multi-sport athlete who played tennis all four years, added basketball during his senior year, and played football as a freshman and sophomore. He brings the same effort, attitude, and sportsmanship to everything he does.

Off the ice, Levi is just as impressive. He is involved in National Honor Society, Peer-to-Peer, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Yearbook. He also gives back by helping with the Learn-to-Skate program through the Munising Hockey Association, tutoring fellow students, and assisting with school recycling efforts.

Levi treats people the right way, leads by example, and creates a positive environment around him. He is the kind of athlete younger players look up to, and he represents exactly what this award stands for.
