Jeff Finlay from Oak Brook, Illinois, and his longtime friend Roger Mataisek from Madison, Wisconsin, sampled a couple of fisheries with me over a two-day period late last week. These two men first met in 1958 and have had an enduring friendship of over 68 years, held together by the one thing they love so much….fishing.

Jeff Finlay loves his Grant fishing rods and has attended two Grant Slam fishing extravaganzas down in Costa Rica. Roger Mataisek is a member of the Yahara Fishing Club. keep bending them Grandt rods guys!

I took my new 2026 Ranger 620 Cup series boat out Sunday for its frst ever fishing and outboard break in trip. Along for inauguration of this boat, where Nick Komp, his son Lucas, and his son‘s buddy Caleb. This isn’t the first time these folks have been in one or more of my boats, and it was a real pleasure to see them again today on my inaugural trip.

It took us a little time to find the bass, but when we did, smiles quickly appeared on everyone’s faces! Senkos and Chatterbaits did all the damage today.

I got to tell ya, I love the new boat. It's everything I planned for it to be when I ordered it. Hats off to Jacob over at “The Boat Doc for rigging all the best add-ons, and to Ethan and Tyler for their added input.

I’ve named the new boat the “Gray Ghost“. I will perform a walk-through and highlight video on the boat features in a future post.

When I picked up my new Ranger 620 from The Boat Doc dealership in Lomira last week my first stop was JB Detailing in Randolph, WI. To have a ceramic coating applied to my new boat, outboard, and trailer!

What is a ceramic coating?

It’s a liquid polymer coating that chemically bonds to the gel coat surface. It is not wax. Once cured, it forms a very hard, slick protective layer.

A ceramic coating on a fiberglass fishing boat can provide three major benefits:

1. UV protection — helps prevent oxidation and fading
2. Easier cleaning — slime, water spots, and scum come off more easily
3. Gloss enhancement — gives the gel coat a deeper shine and slick feel

The cost for my ceramic coating was much lower because preparation time was minimized since the the boat hadn’t oxidized from exposure to the sun and water.

if you are thinking about a ceramic coating for your new fishing boat, automobile, or motorcycle, give Jared Buwalda at JB Detailing a phone call at 920-296-4471

Thanks to everyone who attended my fishing tackle and lures garage sale and made it such an uplifting experience. The Coike Hideups, Berkley Lab Series, Coike Hideups, Deps Sakamatas, and Berkley Moebe’s were a huge hit, and the Denali fishing rods were snapped up quickly, a true testament to the power of my community which is rich in fishing talent!

Seminar Announcement:

Who: Rock Valley Anglers of Illinois Club
When: Wednesday, May 13, 2026, starting at 6:30 pm
Where: Hoffman House Banquets
7502 E State St, Rockford, IL
Admission: Free

There’s just something special about spring. The ice is gone, the water is warming, and bass are beginning their yearly transition from wintering areas toward shallow water feeding and spawning zones. It’s a season filled with opportunity, changing conditions, and some of the best fishing of the entire year.

Whether you fish natural lakes here in Wisconsin, river systems, reservoirs, or shallow backwaters, spring bass behavior follows predictable movements that anglers can learn to understand and capitalize on. This Wednesday night, May 13th, I will break down those movements and discuss how to consistently locate and catch both largemouth and smallmouth bass during the spring.

I’ll cover:

• How water temperature influences bass movement
• Pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn patterns
• The best spring locations to target
• Productive lures, colors, and presentations
• Boat positioning and electronics strategies
• Cold-front adjustments and changing weather conditions
• And techniques that consistently put fish in the boat

I’m looking forward to meeting you there!

If you’re looking to sharpen your spring muskie game and get fired up for the upcoming fishing season, come join me tonight in Alsip, IL, at the Midwest Musky Club meeting at the Village Sportsmen Club!

I’ll be talking about prime spring muskie opportunities, productive early-season patterns, and where the action can be found. I’ll also be sharing information about my guide service and the fantastic bass, walleye, panfish, and muskie fishing opportunities on the south-central Wisconsin lakes I guide.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight at the Village Sportsmen Club, 5201 W. 115th St., Alsip, IL.

Whether you’re a hardcore muskie angler or just looking for more fishing opportunities this season, this should be a fun and informative evening. Hope to see you there!
